In the coming month the media kit for my book will be released!! This means I get to officially let the media and other sources know that my book will launch soon.

This also means I need suggestions for regional and national media opportunities. What podcasts, news shows, newspapers, ticktock accounts, etc should I suggest? Any children's book stores I should include? I'm hoping to get my book some national coverage- I know its a long shot but I can dream!!

Next up will be a release of the cover for my book and then I will release the title :) Who's excited?!

The publisher found the perfect illustrator for my book 🄳

If you choose to publish with a traditional publisher they will locate and pay for the illustrator. You provide the creative direction and they do the hard work of finding the perfect fit. Even if you go the hybrid or self-publish road, an illustrator is an essential part of your book. The illustrations are what bring life to your text, evoke emotion, or help the reader create connections where words may lack.

Here are a few things that may help when you are thinking about illustrations:
šŸ“šSpend time looking at other books and searching for illustrators that align with your text
šŸŽØThink about the style and art method ( water color, oil pastel, pencil etc)
šŸ–ŒCreate a mood board for color pallet, another for main characters, and another for general themes and style
ā˜€ļøBe open to interpretation. You may have an idea of what you want and you should. BUT, try to be flexible within your vision. Artists see the world in a very different way and envision a scene completely differently than how you imagined.

There are SO MANY books out there to help children understand and process death and

Some are great, many are not.

There is no perfect book out there for topics as complex as death and grief.

In my practice I am known to tape pages together or skip certain pages all together.

Why?

Because most childrens books are not written by someone that understands child development. Many children's books on death and grief are filled with flowery imagery, euphemistic language, or religiously specific terms such as heaven, angels, or God.

Choosing a book through the lens of changes the way you read and what you look for.

Remember, there is no perfect book which is why I suggest collecting a wide variety so that you can pull from the ones that are the right fit for the child and family you are working with.

RIght now, these are the 3 books I have been using most often in my practice. I'm sure this will change as the children I work with change, but for now check out these titles and see if they are a good fit for your practice.

It’s been a busy few months over here. With the transition from in person to family sessions I noticed an interesting trend in my clients.

Since the pandemic, most of my referrals and clients are now parents with children under the age of 6. Most of not all are struggling with challenges of emotion regulation and overall

One of my go-to strategies is implementing instead of time ā€˜outs’. There are many ways to do this but I love the creativity and ease that has in their time in kits.

Empowering children and parents to use skills of emotional expression and regulation are so powerful! In just a weeks time one family commented how simply creating a calm down corner and no more spanking (which is a whole other topic) decreases the tantrums from 10 a week to just ONE!!

How has your self care routine changed? Mine has completely changed! Proof? Check out my total pantry clean out and re-stock.
After hours and hours over the past few days of furiously scrambling to reach out to my hundreds of students, put my 3 courses online, and check in on family and loved ones I felt completed overwhelmed.

My form of self care the past few months has been trapeze; learning how to trust my body and trust the rope and bar to hold me and keep me safe as been the most healing experience since the death of our baby.

Now, there is no trapeze, no yoga class, no go to a coffee shop and write time. Instead I’ve been channeling my anxiety, fear, and anger into...cleaning! Of all the things I imagined would help this is not one of them, but alas, I’ve found it so cleansing on an emotional level to clean parts of my home left untouched since Maurice died.

These are uncertain times and now more than ever we need our full selves to be able to show up to support our family, neighbors, and community.

Get it all out they said.

Easier said than done.

There have been countless clients I have urged to journal or write their grief down. Research indicates that writing is not only therapeutic but can actually lead to a decrease in the intensity of anxiety related grief symptoms. Yet, for me the process of even THINKING about writing has caused enormous anxiety. It all feels like so much. Too much. Yet, I know I need to do this, for no one else than myself.

And so...Today I began. Small steps.

Wow! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. Between leaving Boston, moving to ga and buying a home life has been a bit busy.

Today we got to enjoy the local farmers market which is literally down the block from our new home 🄰

Our haul from the was plentiful and we made a delicious dense meal from potatoes, onions, peppers, spaghetti squash and topped it off with some sautéed tempeh!! 🄘

Getting back into a kitchen that is functional and spacious has been some of the best relaxation ever! Dessert is thanks to and her AMAZING gluten free vegan soy free tahini chocolate chip cookies. I substituted chips for chocolate, for sugar, and used almond flour šŸ˜

Can’t wait to update more on yummy cooking adventures and finding new gems in Athens, GA!!
