There’s lots of attention these days on alcohol and breast cancer risk, which I think is definitely an important piece of information we can give people to help inform their choices, but it’s also helpful to explain how that happens and help people understand the actual risks.

While specific properties of alcohol do increase potential breast cancer development, studies show that the increased risk attributable to drinking is fairly minimal with low or moderate amounts of alcohol. So, if alcohol does play a role in your life, I’d recommend just trying to limit it, ideally no more than 3 to 5 drinks per week (or less if you can!), and to have keeping an eye on intake be one more part of balancing a healthier lifestyle we ideally all strive for as best we can 💕

Day 1 after my sensation-preserving/nipple-sparing mastectomy & direct-to-implant reconstruction and honestly feeling so much better than I thought I would (other than wondering how people regularly sleep on their backs because it is already SO hard 😭!). So much more to say and share in coming weeks but for now just have to thank everyone who has reached out to support me - I really couldn’t feel more cared for or loved! Also my amazing surgical team of Drs. Lisa Cassileth and Heather Richardson and their incredible staff 💕. And finally who took on doing my nerve repairs even with the added stress for him of taking care of me so I could have the very best outcome - Ziv, not enough words to thank you for showing up for me through this, it’s everything ❤️

Left Presidio Surgery Center today after a whirlwind day of breast cancer & breast reconstruction surgeries made so great thanks to the amazing people I get to work with but also so bittersweet knowing I won’t be back here for awhile during my recovery from surgery. I know four weeks shouldn’t feel that long, but pretty sure I haven’t gone more than a week and a half in the last decade without getting to show up to this incredible place with co-workers who have really become like family and am going to miss it so much 💕

Lily and Lisa, I would wish for you that you get to work with another surgeon in the next month who loves and appreciates you as much as I do, but since that’s not possible ❤️, I’ll just hope that you save all your great weekend recaps, kid stories and reality TV catch-ups for when I’m back 💕

Have had so many people from here make me feel so incredibly loved over the past months and today was no exception. Wish everyone could be as lucky as I am with my PSC family - can’t wait to see you all so soon 💕

Having surgery in less than 2 weeks is definitely starting to hit, and there’ve been a lot of “this is my last ____ before my mastectomy” (and everything that comes with it) thoughts running through my head lately, like my last concert, or swim in the ocean, or late night dance party, or family volleyball game.

But one of the joys of being part of this beautiful community of is that I get to see SO many people who’ve been through this before, absolutely thriving, living their lives, feeling better than they ever have. And as some of my favorites & recently reminded me ❤️, I have a bunch of really good firsts around the peace of hopefully being done with breast cancer forever right around the corner 💕💕💕

I heard this quote recently in an class with and it’s really stuck with me, especially right now reflecting on how much steadier I feel going through this second diagnosis compared to the first - so beautiful to think that not only do I get the amazing people who’ve been there for me for decades like my family and friends I’ve known since I was a teenager or through the deep bonds of med school and residency, but also people newer to me through work, or raising our kids together, or patients who have become like family and ones who have shown up in the most incredible ways. Hope this possibility of how many more people will deeply matter to you that you don’t even know yet you fills you with as much sparkliness as it did for me 💕💕

So grateful that the Supreme Court ruled today to protect essential access to preventive health services for millions of Americans, particularly life-saving cancer screenings and risk-reducing treatments 💕💕

Endlessly grateful to for continuing to share how knowing her breast cancer risk led her to getting a breast MRI that found her bilateral breast cancer that hadn’t been seen on the mammogram she’d had just months before. As scary as finding out your risk may feel, being able to proactively do something to take control of your health and potentially save your life is SO worth it - 🔗 in bio if you want to learn more about your breast cancer risk 💕💕

Growing up in a family of oncologists and working on my first breast cancer study when I was just in high school, I always thought I’d be a part of the cancer world as a doctor, but of course never imagined I’d be a part of the patient community also. And while there are days that being a part of the is definitely not pretty, the gifts it has brought are truly so beautiful and soul-filling, from getting to take care of and then become family with patients like after developing sensation-preserving mastectomies with ; to fully understanding just how much strength it takes to navigate a new breast cancer diagnosis and all that comes with it with the grace and courage of ; to being a part of the family and getting to see the true magic of their community and all of the amazing people I’ve met through them along the way.

So for all of you finding yourselves in the hardest and scariest moments that you’re not sure how to even begin to imagine the other side of, just know that some day there will be another side, and it just may bring you the sparkliest surprises, joy, and love you might never have gotten without them 💕💕💕
