Juliet Choi, President & CEO of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, joined congressional representatives and other key leaders in health care advocacy in a virtual press call to discuss the devastating impacts of the GOP health care crisis on communities of color.

“Over 20 million Americans, including 1.5 million Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, rely on the ACA Marketplace to keep quality health care within reach," Choi said. "Allowing these vital tax credits to expire will drive up costs by an average of $700 per plan and leave nearly 5 million people uninsured. Families have already faced the largest Medicaid cuts in history this year; Congress cannot allow even more Americans to be pushed out of care.”

Congressional representatives Grace Meng, Rep. Glenn Ivey, US Rep Darren Soto, U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, and Nydia Velazquez were in attendance.

Represented organizations include:
- NCNW Headquarters
- Protect Our Care
- Community Catalyst
- The National Urban League
- Coalition on Human Needs
- Families USA
- UnidosUS
- Emory University School of Medicine

Last year, the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) partnered with several community-based organizations through the Pfizer EVAC program. The purpose of this funding is to improve vaccination outcomes in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities through community-driven educational initiatives, in-language resource development, and vaccine administration.

Learn more about the impact this program had on HOPE Clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) located in Texas:

“As our target populations struggle with being underinsured, offering routine immunizations at affordable rates has encouraged many families to establish a health home with us. While vaccine fatigue was evident among community members, there was a significant appreciation for the educational materials and guidance provided in their native languages.

“Our community health workers (CHWS) highlighted that engagement would have been far more challenging if communication had been limited to English alone, underscoring the importance of culturally and linguistically tailored outreach.

“Thus, by using vaccine advocacy to promote long-term primary care, we are working not only to reduce factors that contribute to vaccine disparities but other health disparities as well.” Gina Lulu Toumajian, Federal Grants & Programs Manager at HOPE Clinic

Thank you to Lulu and the HOPE Clinic team for your hard work supporting your community, and for sharing your story with us!
