Nell Petry may have been known as a legal secretary, but in reality she was a prolific writer with a talent for carefully selecting her words to paint a beautiful picture of her past. She is one of many fascinating people who have called 1400 Geary Blvd their home.

At 80 years old Nell wrote about her childhood living on a farm in Northern California, what it was like growing up with three brothers, her memories, and trips she'd taken to San Francisco and Chinatown. We hope you enjoy this story that lives in our majestic library along with a dozen more stories in “A Charmed Life: Writings of Nell Petry.”

Over the years, you'll find performers and musician and artists like Curtis Fields living at The Sequoias. Curtis, a wildly accomplished painter and printmaker, passionately created landscapes and abstract art. With more than 60 years perfecting his artistry, his work showcased bold experiments with color, form, and range.

Curtis was born in New York, and after serving in the Navy during World War II, he worked as a designer while studying painting and printmaking in NYC and Paris. His paintings gracefully capture the serene landscapes of Mexico, France, Spain, Italy, California, and Hawaii. His art is located in public and private collections around the world.

Curtis' work can also be found in the expansive library at The Sequoias San Francisco.

Many retired professionals call The Sequoias home. And every single one of our past and present residents have amazing life stories from their childhood to their studies to adventures they took around the globe.

For example, Sarah Elizabeth Allen was a young and eager pediatrician with an adventurous spirit. She moved to Africa to complete her residency at Moi University School of Medicine in Kenya. While doing her clinical work, she was challenged to perform life-saving procedures without modern medical equipment.

Aside from her studies, Sarah trekked through the savanna looking for rhinos, elephants, lions, and zebras. No African experience is complete without the strenuous feat of summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro.

In her book, “Africa letters: physician writes to friends, family, and colleagues about medical work and travel in Africa,” Sarah recounts the exhilarating feeling of being at the highest point of the great mountain. You can find her book in the vast collection of the library at The Sequoias San Francisco.

Here are two tips from Matt Paxton of Legacy List on PBS. We hosted a Matt Paxton webinar earlier this year called the Upside to Downsizing.

1. If you have baseball, football or basket ball cards find a local card shop and sell the entire collection as is, not sorted. It won’t be for a lot of money, so don't spend time sorting them.

2. If you have comic books make a list of what you have and go to https://hubs.ly/H0Q7NFX0. A local comic book shop will give you 50% of the value. eBay and Facebook Marketplace are also worth trying.

Downsizing is not easy, but it can take a huge weight off your shoulders. If you have China, crystal, or silverware you need to give up before moving here's an idea: Give the pieces to an art studio that will re-purpose and upcycle them into art. There is a lot of creativity in our region.
