Hello friends and family of The Dancing Cat! Can you believe that it has been 10 years since we first opened our doors at 702 E Julian? When Mary and I conceived of opening a cat adoption lounge, we had no idea that we’d still be here 10 years later, with nearly 1800 cats adopted and a strong and caring community holding our cats and our mission with love. What’s remarkable to me is that many of our current core group of volunteers and staff have been with us from the very early days. I take this as affirmation that we’re doing something right, that we’ve struck an important chord that resonates in our community. I treasure the friends I’ve made, the heartwarming moments that simply being with cats have brought, and the joy of getting to know all of the cats and people I’ve met during this journey.

Some of my fondest memories from the years are the stories of cats that were given a second chance at a happy ending. There are too many to name, but they include cats that I personally fostered such as Seal, Hera, Bodhi, Karuna, and our rescue’s namesake Karma. Each cat has a story, and every cat is deserving of a safe and loving home.

With the challenges in sheltering and veterinary care that have arisen in this post-pandemic era, our work has shifted. We spend even more of our time and energy advising the public on how to care for their own cats or cats they have found abandoned. We connect cat guardians with low-cost veterinary care, and occasionally contribute to the cost of this care. We advocate for cats and their guardians in our work with the City of San Jose, and network with other rescues to save cats’ lives.

While I can’t predict what the next 10 years will bring, I know for certain that the hard and joyful work of cat rescue is important and very much worth the effort.
