Sitting down and standing up are movements most people do many times every day. Doing them correctly helps protect your lower back, hips, and knees.
When standing up from a chair, scoot to the edge of the seat. Lean your body slightly forward. Avoid placing your hands on your knees and push through your legs and butt as you stand. This helps improve balance and reduces strain on your back.
When sitting down, move slowly. Reach your hips back and trust that the chair is there and will catch you!
Practicing proper sit to stand movement can improve mobility, reduce fall risk, and help maintain independence as we age.
Small changes in daily movement can make a big difference over time.
