Chris would probably not approve of me posting this photo—but too often we only share pictures of him looking strong, healthy, and vibrant. He was all of that, and it was a blessing. But as we celebrate his 63rd birthday tomorrow, it feels just as important to acknowledge the struggle he carried with such courage.
The helmet in this photo was the result of an infection after surgery in which part of his skull had to be removed. While waiting for repair, he had to wear it—and he truly hated it. Yet it never kept him from showing up at the yoga studio when he could. Some of you may even remember: it didn’t stop him from practicing.
Can you imagine? A hole in your skull, and still desiring the benefits of yoga enough to try—within limits, with wisdom, with heart. He knew that it would lift his spirits, be good for him and give him the energy to live gratefully through another day. This mattered but being with all of you, BYSJ community, mattered most! Even in this photo, he is where he always loved to be, at the front desk, greeting you as you came in and as you left!
His motto was “one day at a time.” A common phrase, yes—but Chris lived it fully.
Tomorrow we honor him with a free day of yoga. Come. Bring a friend. Join us online if you can. Feel Chris’s energy encouraging you, especially if you’re moving through your own difficult season.
Happy birthday, my friend.
