WHY WERE WOMEN DRINKING MORE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC?

Did you know that during the COVID-19 pandemic, women’s alcohol consumption superseded men’s alcohol intake by almost 40%, resulting in several health consequences? Compared to men, women were disproportionately laid off, had to resign and dealt with greater mental health, anxiety and insomnia issues.

Alcohol-related deaths rose by about 42% among women between the ages of 35 to 44 from 2019 to 2020

REASONS FOR INCREASED CONSUMPTION:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, women were forced to take on additional responsibilities while working from home including taking care of and teaching home-schooled kids as well as additional household responsibilities including taking care of their aging parents/family members.

According to MDlinx, research showed that women experienced layoffs at higher rates than men, and experienced higher rates of anxiety and deteriorating mental health, which led to higher rates of drinking.

STATISTICS ON DRINKING:

According to a recent article published by Harvard Health, women faced higher rates of clinically significant anxiety, as well as sleep, mood, and health-related issues as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because women metabolize alcohol differently than men, they often achieve higher concentrations of alcohol in the blood after drinking the same amount. As a result, this can lead women to be more susceptible to the negative effects of consuming alcohol such as hypertension, liver disease, and cancer, as well as cognitive impairments.

POSSIBLE TREATMENT OPTIONS:

For patients who are experiencing alcohol dependency issues, there are many options. Ideally these options would be used adjunctly and address the psychological, emotional, physiological, mental and social aspects of the person.
Medications such as naltrexone, acamprosate, Vivitrol and disulfiram are FDA-approved MAT (medication assisted treatments) that help with reduced drinking and/or abstinence, according to information published by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The above medications help with physical cravings but treatment needs to also include behavioral treatments such as 12 step attendance, alcohol counseling, CBT, ACT, coaching. These address the root causes of drinking and provide emotional and motivational support to patients. These treatments can be used as standalone options or through a combined approach.

Hopefully, these treatments can help patients—particularly women—reduce their COVID-19-prompted alcohol consumption. The benefits are tremendous since women can additionally help their children find healthier ways of coping with life challenges a they mentor and guide them during these post pandemic challenging times.

When we hear dementia, our minds tend to gravitate to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Many treatment options for dementia are in the works. That said, studies have found 4 foods that can fight against cognitive decline:

1. Blueberries - these delicious fruits contain anthocyanin, a substance that protects us against CVD, Type II, and Alzheimer's

2. Leafy Greens - the bioactive compounds tested were found to be correlated with cognitive decline

3. Turmeric - can react with free radicals to prevent cancer

4. Legumes - a research study of 24 individuals found those who ate legumes demonstrated better cognitive performance

As we continue to make discoveries in the fields of neuroscience and nutrition, we continue to make choices that better express our genes and optimize our health!

BPA (Bisphenol A) is an industrial chemical that is commonly used in many food plastic containers, such as food cans and water bottles. The FDA states that BPA levels observed in food products is low enough to be safe, but recent research says otherwise.

These studies show that BPA exposure can:

- increase anxiety, depression, autistic behaviors, and memory loss in children

- increase the risk and worsen cardiovascular diseases

With the functional medicine model, we look to see what preventative measures we can implement. In order to minimize the amount of BPA in our bodies, we stop microwaving foods with plastics, and try to avoid BPA labeled products. Check out EWG (Environmental Working Group) for other hormonal and neuroendocrine disruptors!

2,700 deaths. And rising. Teen va**ng is one of the fastest growing narcotics in this country, especially given its popularity with users under the age of 35. Temple Health magazine reports that "the percentage of high school students who use E-ci******es or va**ng products has more than doubled in the last 3 years."

Many states have begun to ban the addictive flavors and Temple medical students have also started informing local teenagers' about the detrimental effects associated with va**ng. Electronic ci******es are NOT a 'healthier' alternative to normal ci******es!

About 25-45 million Americans suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). While IBS isn't life threatening, it can decrease one's overall quality of life. Research illustrates that patients who are physically inactive are 3.6x more likely to suffer from IBS than their inactive counterparts. In addition to exercise, there are several approaches that need to be implemented such as:

-gluten-free and (when warranted) elimination diets
-pre and probiotics
-gut manipulation therapy

Patients can begin by appreciating the bidirectional component of the gut-brain access system and fine-tune their behavioral tools that help them calm their autonomic nervous system. Through cognitive behavioral therapy, patients can reduce their underlying stress and attain more symptom-free periods with their IBS. Who would've though that mindful meditation could help our your gut!

Studies have found an inverse correlation between higher physical activity and lower risks of dementia. In a study published in 2019 in Neurology, researchers studied 454 brain autopsies, and found that higher levels of total daily activity and better motor abilities were associated with improved cognition and overall mental heath. Now more than ever, patients can take charge of their own health when it comes to health optimization and dementia prevention. Half hour of physical activity in nature can help boost ones mood, prevent cardio vascular disease, strengthen the immune system and help prevent dementia! !

A recent study by the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, authored by Jane O'Halloran, MD, PhD; Charles Goss, PhD; and Phillip Mudd, MD, PhD, has proved that a quick blood test for high mitochondrial DNA level markers can help predict those who are at highest risk for earlier treatment interventions including intubation. The sickest patients with COVID demonstrate a 10 fold increase in this Mitochondrial DNA spillage (as cells die, their mitochondria are spilled into the serum and adjacent interstitium and can be measured). This blood test will be able to be used in hospital settings (after FDA clearance) for now, since it uses the same machinery that processes the standard PCR test for COVID-19. I am hoping that labs such as Genova diagnostics, Vibrant and Quest can come up with a home kit version so as to help patients with their not-so-clear self triage protocols. It can be be an important inflammation/infection/rapid cell death marker and help patients decide as to whether they ought to seek urgent medical help or "weigh things out at home" as many are advised to do!
