Today we recognize National Disability Independence Day, marking the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed into law on July 26, 1990. This landmark legislation prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including healthcare.

At Good Samaritan Hospital, we are committed to creating an environment where all patients, visitors, and team members feel seen, respected, and supported, regardless of ability.

From accessible care spaces to communication support, we strive to remove barriers and ensure equity in healthcare for every individual who walks through our doors.

Let today serve as a reminder of the progress made - and the ongoing work required - to advance accessibility and inclusion in everything we do.

☀️ The Dreaded Sunburn: Prevention & Relief Tips ☀️
We’ve all been there - that hot, red, painful reminder that we stayed in the sun a little too long. A sunburn isn’t just uncomfortable - it’s skin damage that can increase your risk of skin cancer over time.

Here’s how to protect your skin and find relief if you get burned:

Prevention Tips:
• Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every 2 hours - and after swimming or sweating
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective clothing, and sunglasses
• Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Don’t forget easy-to-miss spots like ears, tops of feet, and the back of your neck

If you do get burned:
• Apply cool compresses or take a cool shower
• Use aloe vera or fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe skin
• Stay hydrated - sunburn pulls fluids from your body
• Avoid further sun exposure while healing
• Don’t pop blisters - they’re your skin’s natural bandage

If you experience severe pain, fever, chills, or signs of infection, seek medical attention.

Protect your skin - it’s the only one you’ve got! 💙

Meet Dr. Sarah Lee - our Medical Director for Obstetrics, expert in maternal fetal medicine, and a true example of clinical excellence at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Dr. Lee earned her medical degree from UC San Diego, completed her residency at Los Angeles General (where she served as Chief Resident), and her maternal fetal fellowship at Yale. Her calm, compassionate approach brings clarity to even the most complex and emotional situations.

A patient recently shared: “I started out devastated, but after speaking with Dr. Lee, I felt better. She truly connected with me, and her compassion was genuine. I’m grateful for her wisdom and soul.”

A dedicated mentor and respected colleague, she was recently honored with an Excellence Award at our Physician Dinner and serves on our Board of Trustees. “Working alongside her is an honor,” said a teammate. “She brings out the best in all of us and gives our team the confidence to deliver the highest level of care.”

Thank you, Dr. Lee, for leading with knowledge, compassion, and excellence.

Excellence in Action: Meet Gabe from the CVICU 💙

Gabe’s journey to nursing began in his teens, inspired by the steady, compassionate care his grandfather received during hospital stays. He saw the difference a nurse’s presence could make and committed to being that calm and comforting force for others.

Today, Gabe brings that same excellence to Good Samaritan Hospital’s CVICU, where each high-acuity case sharpens his clinical expertise and strengthens his resilience. He thrives on the continuous learning that nursing demands and finds inspiration in the stories of his patients - like the world traveler who unknowingly helped him build his own bucket list.

Gabe reminds us that nursing excellence isn’t just about skill - it’s about connection, compassion, and growth.

Coffee with a Surgeon at Good Samaritan Hospital featured Kirk Churukian, MD, FACS, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with over 25 years of experience. Dr. Churukian met with our nurses to discuss the management of hand injuries - a topic that spans trauma care, surgical repair, and long-term recovery.

Hand injuries can significantly affect a person’s daily life, and early, expert treatment is key to restoring function and preventing complications. Dr. Churukian shared valuable tips on recognizing serious injuries, surgical options, and the role nurses play in early intervention and rehab.

We’re grateful for Dr. Churukian’s insights and commitment to patient care - and to our nurses who never stop learning!

Meet Jessica. She’s a cancer survivor and her daughter has Type 1 diabetes. They’re among millions of Americans who are about to face a major increase in health insurance costs.

Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) are currently helping 24 million people – including our patients – afford high-quality healthcare coverage through the insurance Marketplace (Healthcare.gov). Americans who purchase insurance on their own and rely on the tax credit are now facing skyrocketing costs if Congress allows the credit to expire at the end of 2025, putting at risk the health of children like Jessica’s daughter.

“We were living a perfectly normal life, and we suddenly had a child that had a chronic illness,” said Jessica. “We’re not wealthy. Money can get tight…we need Congress to take action now. It’s vital for us.”

08/07/2025

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the arms or legs. It’s easy to mistake PAD for other conditions like hip arthritis or spinal stenosis, which means often goes undiagnosed. Many people with PAD don’t experience symptoms at all. That’s why awareness of risk factors – such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking – is crucial for screening.

Understanding the early warning signs is the first step toward timely intervention and better quality of life. In most cases, lifestyle changes, exercise and medications are enough to slow the progression or even reverse the symptoms of PAD, so talk to your doctor if you think you may be at risk.
