Tips for Dealing with Stress
1. Do it now- Do your most difficult tasks at the beginning of the day when you are fresh. Procrastination feeds stress.
2. Get Organized- Use a paper, cell or computer calendar, schedule events, make a "to do list", organizing the details of your daily life reduces stress.
3. Rehearse (visualize)- When you know that you are going to face a stressful situation, rehearse how you are going to handle it. Picture yourself handling it successfully.
4. Set Boundaries- Give yourself permission to say no to others and yes to your self-care. Limit number of activities you take on.
5. Exercise- Cardiovascular workouts raise your heart rate and that releases endorphins that helps control the brain's response to stress and anxiety. A quick stroll on your lunch break can help with stress.
6. Positive Self-Talk- Reinforce your resolve through positive statements such as, "I can handle this." Our thoughts are powerful and can change our mood.
7. Sleep- Problems always look worse at night. Tell yourself that the problem will be there in the morning and you need sleep now.
8. Take Charge- Take responsibility for making your life what you want it to be. It is less stressful to make decisions than to feel powerless and react to others.
9. Keep Hydrated/Eat Protein- Drink water throughout the day. Eat small amounts of protein during the day such as nuts and yogurt.
10. Laugh- Humor is good for your spirit. Spend time with people who make you laugh. Connect with others. We are social beings and need time with others.
