I am deeply saddened by the passing of the Honorable Norman Y. Mineta, who served as Mayor of San Jose, Congressman, Commerce Secretary under President Bill Clinton and Transportation Secretary for President George W. Bush.

Secretary Mineta was a champion of civil rights and worked to find consensus among his peers on both sides of the political aisle.

He was the driving force behind the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, which formally made reparations for the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. He himself was imprisoned as a child with his family at an internment camp.

He also was co-sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991.

Secretary Mineta was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, as well as the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Medal for his civil-rights contributions.

I had the privilege of serving as a legislative aide to Secretary Mineta. He was the consummate statesman. And a dear friend.

In a time of acute housing insecurity, we are proud to collaborate with the Nicholson Family, who are ensuring hundreds of San Jose families will continue to have homes. Just had the great pleasure of joining a surprise Zoom party greeting for Honorable Norman Y. Mineta’s 90th birthday! The online gathering was featured in a column in The Mercury News (https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/11/18/its-time-to-talk-turkey-for-santa-clara-county-nonprofits/).

It has been a tremendous honor to have been even a tiny part of Secretary Mineta’s unparalleled legacy by serving on his congressional staff at the start of my career and supporting his vast efforts as a stellar leader and public servant.

The Honorable Norman Y. Mineta served as Mayor of San Jose, a U.S. Congressman, Commerce Secretary under President Bill Clinton and Transportation Secretary under President George W. Bush.

Imprisoned as a child with his family during the Japanese American internment of World War II, Secretary Mineta became the first Asian American to serve in a presidential cabinet and has been a leading voice in the field of civil rights. He was a driving force behind the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, which formally made reparations for the internment of Japanese Americans. In 1995, George Washington University awarded Mineta the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Medal for his civil-rights contributions. He is also a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient.
