As part of Women’s History Month, we would like to showcase another notable female figure in pharmacy. Mary Munson Runge broke down barriers as the first female, first African American, and the first employee of a community pharmacy. In response to her working at a community pharmacy she stated, “The greatest experience was helping poor African American people who couldn’t even pay for their medicine. Pharmacy gave me an opportunity to help people who needed help.” Like Mary, we take value in helping others.

March is Women’s History Month and we want to shed light on some of the women that have pioneered the way for others in the pharmaceutical industry. Elizabeth Gooking Greenleaf is considered to be the first woman pharmacist in the 13 colonies. Previously, this role was held exclusively by men; however, this did not stop Greenleaf from doing what she truly wanted to do. Elizabeth is 1 of the 17 women honored by the American Pharmacist Association for “contributions to the profession and advancement of women in pharmacy.” We are inspired by the contributions Elizabeth made towards women in the pharmaceutical space.
