This October, please join us in celebrating the Filipinx American community and their important historical and cultural contributions! 🇵🇭💙

Swipe + read below to learn more about the history of Filipinx in America ↓

Trinity Ordoña: Activist, community organizer, and forebear of the AAPI le***an movement

Larry Itliong: Labor organizer and civil rights activist who founded the United Farm Workers alongside Cesar Chavez (right)

Third World Liberation Front: In 1968, the Philippine American Collegiate Endeavor (PACE), a Filipinx American student organization at SFSU, joined forces with the Black Student Union (BSU), the Mexican American Student Confederation (MASC), the Latin American Student Organization (LASO), the Intercollegiate Chinese for Social Action (ICSA), and the Asian American Political Alliance to form the Third World Liberation Front. This coalition fought for ethnic studies in higher education and conducted the longest student strike in U.S. history. This resulted in the creation of the first College of Ethnic Studies as well as expanded college access for people of color.

Let’s celebrate the achievements of Filipinx this month and continue to support their endeavors! 🫶🏽

Starting this month is LGBTQ+ History Month where we’re going to highlight various local historical events and places that have impacted the community. It is important to acknowledge and value the work that has been done before us as we continue to fight for equal rights and safe spaces. 🏳️‍🌈💕

This week we highlight the Compton Cafeteria Riots which took place in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District in 1966. With all the policing on q***r identities, patrons of the cafeteria were fed up and decided to fight against the police brutality on q***r and trans individuals. These patrons began to picket the establishment as the owners decided not to serve anyone who seemed to be q***r.

For more pieces of LGBTQ+ history to indulge in while scrolling through social media, come back next week as we highlight the Black Cat Cafe in San Francisco! 🌉
