Gingivitis and periodontitis are both forms of gum disease, but they’re not the same.
Gingivitis:
• Early stage of gum disease
• Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
• Caused by plaque buildup
• Reversible with professional cleaning and good home care
Periodontitis:
• Advanced gum disease
• Gum recession and bone loss
• Possible loose teeth
• Not fully reversible, requires ongoing treatment
The key difference? Gingivitis is preventable and reversible. Periodontitis can permanently damage the structures supporting your teeth.
If you’ve noticed bleeding, swelling, or bad breath that won’t go away, don’t ignore it. Schedule an exam and protect your long-term oral health.
