Cypress Independent Living Services, Inc. Cypress ILS provides its clients with various services focused on such aspects as basic skills development, community awareness, and employment training.

But, it is not simply in the attainment of a job, or arriving at a doctor's appointment on one's own that Cypress seeks for its clients. All the services are geared towards one main goal, the philosophy of Cypress: Informed Choice. It is this skill that empowers all individuals to live their own unique lives. Through the programs offered, the clients are given the opportunity to make their own choices, and the choices they make will be in the context of real life situations, not in such controlled environments as group field trips or seminars. The clients will not only be able to open bank accounts, or choose a particular bank, but will be able to close a bank account and move to another....all of their own volition. To empower the client to this next level of functionality and choice is what Cypress strives for and attains each and every hour of the day with our Consumers. To be able to choose what he or she believes is right for his or her own life, and having the ability to chose because the client has been informed and experienced in any number of situations that individuals face in every day life.... this is the goal of Cypress. Not only to be able to choose...but to able to choose because one knows what the choices are." Our services are goal oriented and are driven by the philosophy that the more independent individuals are in their daily lives, the more successful they will be.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
A Life Skills Coach (LSC) works with and supports individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities in the places they live and work. LSC's perform their jobs in licensed homes, day programs, supported or independent living environments, and work sites. A Life Skills Coach has many important roles to play.

A PARTNER - assisting individuals to lead independent lives and participate in and contribute to the community.

A TEACHER - finding creative and fun ways to help individuals learn meaningful skills and providing them with information to make the best choices for themselves.

An AMBASSADOR - to the individual’s community, encouraging others to interact with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities as neighbors, friends, and co-workers.

An ADVOCATE - supporting individuals to exercise their rights and responsibilities.

A SUPPORTER - seeking to understand the likes, dislikes, hopes, and dreams of individuals they support and working with them as they make progress toward their life goals.

All of the roles that you play have a common focus on supporting individuals to live the kind of lives they choose. The LSC is a Partner, Teacher, Ambassador, Advocate, and Supporter. Unlike a parent, legal guardian, or conservator, the LSC does not have the authority to make important life decisions for individuals they work for and with.
