There are so many different tools we can use to cope with labor when things start to ramp up.
My Birth Comb is one of the most popular tools in my doula bag right now. The concept is that you are sending distracting signals to your brain during the contraction by squeezing the comb cause a different type of intense sensation.
You can use my comb or you can order your own cute one from an Etsy shop with a special phrase engraved on it!

Counter Pressure!
There are several benefits to counter pressure. It can be especially helpful when dealing with back labor. Some moms feel they need it every contraction! You can have counter pressure while you are sitting, standing, leaning, squatting, kneeling, on hands and knees, and laying on your side. Counter pressure can help make more room in the pelvis for baby to descend as well! As a doula, upper body strength definitely becomes important when providing counter pressure. Teaching your partner how to give good, body smart, counter pressure is something I always do at our prenatal appointments!

What are interventions?
Intervention doesn’t have to be scary word as long as they are intentional, thoughtful actions that help you achieve the type of birth you are hoping for. If birth is a road trip and there is unexpected construction going on you will not be successful getting to your destination by plowing through that construction like it isn’t there. Taking a detour with a plan to get back on the road is the wise thing to do! Taking a random turn off and just wandering around aimlessly will result in you ending up in a place you didn’t intend to be. Don’t be afraid of an intervention that is designed to get you safely back on your road!

When is the right time to hire a birth doula?
Before your baby is born!
There is no right time to hire a doula and you can’t miss the ”window”. The earlier you hire your doula the more you get to know them and the more time they can spend on education, building a birth plan with you, and helping you get through your pregnancy. BUT the peer reviewed research and evidence based information is that having a doula in the room with you improves your chances of having a satisfying birth experience by 30% without any requirements for previous relationship!
If you are 12 weeks pregnant or 40 weeks pregnant and thinking you might want a doula, get one!
They make such a difference and are able to support you and your support person in a way no one else on the birth team can!
It’s never too late or too early to start talking to a doula!
