We are delighted to announce that two employees from The Health Trust were coauthors on a paper, with UCSF, titled “Assessing the Health Outcomes of the Food Access Pilot Project: An Evaluation of a Medically Supportive Food Support Program for People Living with HIV in Rural California Counties”. The Health Trust is proud of our Medically Tailored Meal program highlighted in this article; especially the inclusion of residents outside of our County and that thanks to this program 62% of our clients reported no longer being food insecure after 12 months.

The African American Community Service Agency, a Health Trust grantee, was recently featured on ABC7 San Francisco’s Build a Better Bay Area segment! AACSA was recognized for their work to connect people of color to mental health resources, by hosting free therapy-based wellness sessions every other week open to all. For more information, including how to participate in these sessions, please see the ABC7 article below.
Michele Lew, CEO of The Health Trust, will be a keynote speaker at Joint Venture Silicon Valley’s 2022 State of the Valley Conference!

The 2022 State of the Valley conference will be held on February 18. The conference will take place live and in person at Stanford University for an audience capped at 300 people (masked, providing proof of vaccination). The in-person gathering will conform to the official guidelines issued by the public health officers of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
The event will be simultaneously broadcast via Brandlive. Register now: https://jointventure.org/events/state-of-the-valley
With an influx of new COVID-19 clients, The Health Trust also saw a change in client ethnicity demographics. More than one-third of our Meals On Wheels clients now identify as Asian, compared to just 19% pre-pandemic.

This morning, County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg presented The Health Trust and our partners at Bloom Catering with a commendation on behalf of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors recognizing our first-ever Asian fusion Meals On Wheels menu in response to the rise in Asian American clients.

Our meal plans traditionally reflected a “Western” menu, which is customary in most meal delivery programs. However, we found that these meals are not always palatable for all clients, especially clients of color. We know that no matter how appetizing and nutritionally sound meals and food may be, if they are not consumed, then many health and well being issues cannot be addressed. This new menu offers a comforting and familiar meal experience to a growing sector of our meal delivery clients.

Thank you Supervisor Ellenberg for the recognition!

The County of Santa Clara Public Health Department has launched a new HIV Self-Testing program! Self-testing allows individuals to conduct an HIV test and find out their test result within their own home or other private location. This program aims to reach populations that are not testing via other means and increase the number of persons living with HIV who are identified and initiated into treatment. HIV self-testing also provides an opportunity to facilitate linkage to HIV prevention services for those who test negative.

This program is free of cost to those who qualify. At this time, an oral swab is provided for HIV self-testing and a valid mailing address is required. To get started, individuals must complete the required online survey: https://phdsccgov.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3l4JDHsK13otaHc

At the Health Trust, we are honored to support hundreds of veteran clients through our various services each year. Meet Michael and Bill, two clients of The Health Trust that served in our Country’s military.

Michael Moore served four years in the Marines, traveling all over the world, including the Philippines, Japan, and Norway. Michael came to The Health Trust with an HIV diagnoses after he began to lose his eyesight. He had been told on three different occasions that he only had a year to live. However, Michael is strong, and has proven those doctors wrong.

Today, he depends on The Health Trust’s Jerry Larson Food Basket for healthy food because the medication he takes for his adrenal glands must be taken with a meal. Without the Food Basket, Michael says he would not have nutritious meals to eat everyday. Michael utilizes a bus pass he received from The Health Trust to help him get around town as he can no longer drive. He also utilizes our free condom services. “Safety first!” he says. Michael recommends The Health Trust’s services to others in need of extra support and is grateful for the services he receives and the Health Trust team that supports him.

Bill Moberg is a 78-year-old Army veteran who has received Meals on Wheels from The Health Trust for many years. And Bill knows food. He was drafted into the Army and served as an Army Cook for four years, one of those years in South Korea. After being honorably discharged, he completed six years in the reserves. Today, Bill relies on Meals on Wheels for nutritious and tasty home-delivered meals to help his stay healthy and maintain his independence.

Join us in honoring veterans, like Bill and Michael, today by making a donation to support this critical work.

"My mind swirled with random thoughts that ranged from doom to confusion to relief. We got to the elevator in the hospital and went down one floor. When the elevator doors opened, we raced across the lobby straight into the emergency room, where I arrived at 7:41 p.m. Three doctors wearing white smocks waited for us. Within seconds, I got my answer. One of the doctors said, in a calm and matter-of-fact voice, “Mr. García, you’re having a heart attack.” ~ Chapter 13, Page 90

Join Damian Trujillo and Eddie Garcia, next Thursday to learn about Eddie’s story of being on life support during the summer of 2010, his 2020 heart transplant, and living with faith, hope, and love.

In honor of World Heart Day, the Health Trust is proud to sponsor this special conversation. We hope you will join us. 🫀

Santa Clara County couple Henry and Mary have a number of chronic illnesses, and when Henry started taking , the medical expenses piled up. They got help from the county's MedAssist program, which defrays the cost of insulin and several other life-saving drugs.

Mary said the enrollment process was simple: The couple had to upload a tax return, proof of purchase of Henry’s insulin and proof of residency in the county.

“That’s really all there was,” Mary said. “They got back to us within 24 hours.

Letter to President Biden Offers Support and Recommendations for the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health - Grantmakers In Health

Today, we joined Grantmakers In Health and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders (SAFSF), along with The Funders Network, Grantmakers for Education, Native Americans in Philanthropy, and 49 other organizations in philanthropy in sending a letter to President Biden in support of the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. This letter outlines four recommendations for the Administration and federal agencies to adopt leading up to and following the conference. The coalition urges an approach that tackles the root causes of hunger and health inequities - poverty, racism, discrimination, and rural disinvestment - and lays out specific policy and regulatory areas to end hunger and increase nutrition and health.
