Judging for Growing Up in America (GUA) 2026 has officially wrapped up! 🤩

Over the last few weeks, our 100+ judges have been carefully reviewing over 370 submissions. 🧐 One of our judges this year is Sera Fernando, manager of the Office of LGBTQ Affairs at the County of Santa Clara. In both her storytelling and her work, she is committed to uplifting voices that have too often been overlooked.

💬 When asked why she volunteered to be a judge this year, she said, "As a storyteller, I’m drawn to the way activism and the arts intersect to bring forward powerful, deeply personal narratives. Growing up in Eastside San Jose, I rarely saw myself reflected in media as a q***r, transgender, Filipina woman, let alone in ways that were affirming or celebratory of my full, intersectional identity. Volunteering as a judge for GUA not only gives me the opportunity to learn from these incredible stories, but also continually restores my faith in humanity."

HUGE THANKS to Sera and the many other judges who are volunteering their time to support AACI's Growing Up in America 2026 youth art, essay, and video contest! 👏

❗️Winners should be hearing from AACI soon and final winner announcements will be in May.

Hamid was a 27-year-old man from Eritrea who was forced to leave his family back home and flee for his life. After resettling in San Jose, he was connected with AACI Center for Survivors of Torture (CST) and began receiving counseling and case management. His CST counselor, Yonas F., was also from Eritrea and spoke Tigrinya, the same language as Hamid.

When Hamid first started experiencing intense tooth pain, Yonas connected Hamid with Dr. Mehta from AACI Family Dentistry, and she saw him right away on an emergency basis. 🤕🦷

At 27 years old, Hamid never had access to a dentist until now. Yonas accompanied him to his dentist appointment to provide translation and emotional support. Dr. Mehta gave Hamid a complete exam, a deep cleaning, and several fillings. She was non-judgmental and understanding, giving Hamid an education in oral health and took extra time needed to address any issues that arose.

Now, Hamid reports that he’s no longer in pain. He continues to visit AACI Family Dentistry to maintain his oral health and regularly meets with his CST counselor to support his mental health. AACI’s multidisciplinary team were all able to work together to give Hamid the best possible care - accommodating his language needs, supporting him emotionally and helping him navigate the complex medical/dental insurance system.👏

Congratulations to Jiyoung S., an Adult & Older Adult (AOA) Behavioral Health Counselor, on being named employee of the month! 🎉 Here’s what fellow AACI staff had to say about her: 💬 “Jiyoung has shown consistent dedication to supporting our clients through resource connection and advocacy... Even when challenges arose, she remained committed to finding solutions and speaking up for what the client needed, which reflects her strong dedication to client-centered care and teamwork.”

Recognizing that a language barrier can be isolating for her Korean-speaking AOA clients, she encouraged them to join AACI Senior Wellness Program and acted as a cultural bridge for them to feel comfortable participating in social activities. ❤️ Thank you, Jiyoung, for your incredible dedication and all that you do for our community! 👏

Jiyoung is one of our many Behavioral Health counselors on the AACI team. As an AOA counselor, she works with the diverse adult and older adult population of Santa Clara County, who often face tremendous social, cultural, and emotional pressures. The Adult and Older Adult Counseling Program can provide a range of mental health services – including case management, medication support with on-site psychiatrists and registered nurses, neuropsychological assessment, and rehabilitation counseling to promote the optimal functioning of the individual at home and in the community.

The conversation around the Epstein files has centered powerful names, but it’s SURVIVORS who deserve to be heard, protected, and supported.

When systems prioritize wealth and influence over accountability, survivor safety, dignity, and justice are put at risk.

It’s time to re-center survivors by protecting their privacy, providing trauma-informed care, and holding all individuals and systems accountable—no matter their power.

As we get ready to enter the month of April, S*xual Assault Awareness Month, we want to make clear that AACI stands with survivors, all year round. 💜
