*Urgent Action Alert*

Take Action on International Day of the Midwife:
Demand a CA independent Licensed Midwifery board.

ACOG is lobbying to limit Licensed Midwifery's scope of care as a condition of LM independence, including restricting VBAC access. Community midwives deserve to have an independent board of peers and consumers overseeing their own profession without paternalistic restrictions by ACOG.

Birthing families won't stand for ACOG's continued threats to birth autonomy nor for unnecessary physician oversight over our midwives.

Please call in during public comment for the Assembly B&P committee hearing tomorrow morning, 5/5/2021, to keep ACOG and its millions in special interest lobbying money from derailing the Medical Board’s recommendation for the creation of an independent Licensed Midwifery board.

Simply state: “I am calling in to support adding language for a Licensed Midwife Board to be included in the Medical Board of California Sunset Review bill.”

Sign up here for email prompt when public comment opens: https://calmidwives.org/midwife4metoo2021/.

Help get our midwives out from under ACOG control, and prevent further erosion of community birth and VBAC!

Happy Birthday Little One, we all thought you would be tiny, but you weight in just over 7lbs! Your mama was brave and strong and made your birth look easy.

01/15/2021

The 1st birth of the year coudn’t have been better. I hope they let me share a couple of photos. Happy Birthday!

12/29/2020

Welcome to the family sweet boy. You complete them.

11/06/2020

I’ve been incredibly busy helping people birth their babies and I haven’t taken the time to document them here, like I want to. But I can’t resist tonight. I am in absolute awe of the power I witnessed with a first time mama with a two hour labor who describes her labor as “intense, but I wouldn’t call it painful”. Not everyone gets to experience a pain free birth, myself included, but I’m here to say ITS POSSIBLE

U.S. infant mortality rate hits all-time low, CDC reports

Some good news

U.S. infant mortality rate hits all-time low, CDC reports Infant mortality has reached an all-time low in the United States, according to data released Thursday by the CDC. In 2018, 21,498 infant deaths were reported, a decline of 4% from the 22,341 deaths reported in 2017.

I love when a family, at the last minute, chooses to find a provider that more closely fits their needs, and it’s me. We at least got to squeeze in one prenatal visit. Welcome baby girl, we’re so glad to meet you.

Looking for a small stash of Breastmilk for a baby with jaundice. Her pediatrician wants her to supplement just until her milk comes in. San Jose.

12/08/2019

One week old baby could use some supplementation. Do you have any extra breast milk you would like to share Santa Cruz?

11/30/2019

Mama was fearless welcoming her son. Welcome baby, we’re so glad you came.

11/13/2019

Sometimes privacy helps the baby (the mama, actually) come. Welcome baby girl, I’m glad I made it back in time to help your mama birth you.

09/01/2019

Can you believe the last two babies were BOTH born en caul. Magical.

08/21/2019

Dear Valley Medical Center,
This blatant racism is unacceptable. Please tell me someone got fired over this.

Boy Boy Boy Boy. Surprise! This one’s a girl! It was her 5th baby, 4th homebirth and her first water birth. Welcome to the world baby girl. I can’t wait to see how you do with all these doting brothers.

07/20/2019

4 day old baby needs breastmilk. Do you have any in your freezer you can spare while mamas milk supply increases?

06/30/2019

Conversation between my client and her son:

“Hey mama, I got the stefescope, I wanna see if her heart’s beeping.”

“What do you wanna be when you grow up?”

“A doctor, like Sunshine”

“You know Sunshine’s a midwife?”

“Yeah, a midwife like Sunshine”

Timeline photos 04/17/2019

Variations of normal

One of these ladies is 40+2 and the other is 40+4 weeks pregnant. Both went into labour within 24 hours of these pictures. Both had 8lbs2oz babies, both girls.

Another thing both these baby bellies have in common? Their Symphisis Fundal Height is identical, 40cm.

When you hit 22-24 weeks in your pregnancy, your midwife will start measuring your belly. From your p***c bone, to the top part of your uterus - the fundus. This is how they monitor your babies growth curve. Usually the number of weeks you are is the number of centimetres you measure, give or take 2cm. If you fall off the curve your pregnancy has been following, your Midwife will offer you for necessary testing.

So the next time someone tells you you’re “too small” or “too big” for the number of weeks pregnant you are, point them this way!

Pushing for First-Time Moms | Midwifery Today

Gloria Lemay is someone I admire very much. Here’s an article she wrote on Pushing:

Pushing for First-Time Moms | Midwifery Today The expulsion of a first baby from a woman's body is a space in time for much mischief and mishap to occur.

This is not an easy read, but not much about N**i Germany is.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honor this midwife who served in heartbreaking circumstances.

This Midwife at Auschwitz Delivered 3,000 Babies in Unfathomable Conditions Stanislawa Leszczyńska was instructed to murder babies, but refused. She is a candidate for sainthood in the Catholic church.
