This is such a fascinating hypothesis in evolutionary biology known as the “thrifty gene,” which suggests our bodies adapted over millennia to stay strong, clear-headed, and capable during times without food.

It’s thought that this genetic wiring helped our ancestors survive long stretches between meals by making us more efficient and resilient in a fasted state. But now, in a world of constant eating and around-the-clock food access, this once protective mechanism may actually be working against us.

Instead of activating repair and resilience, we’re stuck in a cycle of overeating that fuels inflammation and even blunts our dopamine receptors, leaving us less satisfied and craving more.
