Know a family with a baby in the NICU right now? Here are five tried and true ways to show your support for them in honor of :

➡️ Instead of asking if you can help, try offering something concrete and easy to accept. For example, “I’m going to the store tonight, anything I can get for you?”

➡️ Conversations about the baby’s progress can sometimes feel overwhelming for NICU parents. Let them know you’re available to listen whenever they want to share, and remind them that you’re there to support however you’re able.

➡️ Send practical gift cards for things like gas, food delivery, audiobooks, and preemie clothes.

➡️ If allowed, offer to sit with the baby or near the NICU so parents and caregivers can catch a short break.

➡️ Help make their transition home with the baby as smooth as possible. Offer help with household tasks, stock their freezer with nutritious meals, or rally your community around them for support.

“The overproduction of milk inspired me to look for a way to help and donate breast milk. For those babies who cling to life, I feel very happy to be able to do so, and my son is my greatest motivation. Seeing him so big and healthy, I learned that the extra milk is the love that overflows.” -Martha B.

“Becoming a new mom has opened my heart in ways I never expected. I’ve always loved babies, but holding my own child in my arms gave me a deeper understanding of just how precious and fragile those first moments of life really are. I also realize that not every mother’s journey looks the same. Some moms struggle with producing enough milk, while others watch their little ones in the NICU fighting to grow strong as they wait for their own milk to come.

Knowing how vital breastmilk can be, especially to premature and medically fragile babies, I felt compelled to do something tangible. I’m not an over-supplier by any means. I don’t have freezers packed to the brim like I’ve seen in other households. These days, I only make just enough to feed my own baby, especially because I’m a working mama who realistically doesn’t have the time to pump every two to three hours anymore. But I still wanted to share what I could, because even a few extra ounces can make a difference to a baby who needs it.

Donating my milk felt like the most natural way to help little ones thrive and give other mamas some peace of mind during an already overwhelming time. As mothers, we’re all in this together, and if my milk can give another baby a better start, there’s no greater gift I could give.” -Mizziel S.
