Post exercise carbohydrate intake recommendations are to consume a quantity of 1-1.2 g/kg/bw (gram per kg per bodyweight) with 0 to 4 hours. Yikes, that is lot of numbers; let's make this a little more simple. So 1 pound is equivalent to 2.2 kg. If an individual weighed about 130 lbs (59 kg), then they should consume about 59 grams of carbs post exercise. An example could be 1 medium banana (27g) with one slice whole wheat bread (12g) and 2 Tbsp. peanut butter (11g), or simply just two cups chocolate milk (52g). Who's hungry?!

We are about 72% water and it is important for regulating the body's temperature, lubricating and cushioning our joints, protecting our vital organs, and eliminating waste through urination, perspiration and bowel movements. Avoiding dehydration is key to keeping our bodies health, but what is the best way to assess our need for water? Urination color and frequency is one of the best indicators of whether or not an individual is hydrated. Using the restroom about 9 to 10 times a day means you are hydrated, but an even better way is checking your urine color. Check out the urine chart in this post to assess your hydration level. Now that we have hit November and the seasons are changing, it's time we evaluate our vitamin D consumption. Are you getting enough vitamin D or is an added supplement needed? Originally, humans solely relied upon natural sunlight to produce adequate amounts of vitamin D each day. With recent research, scientists have found that 25 minutes in the sun, especially in the off seasons, Fall, Winter and Spring, is just not enough. Today, most cereals, eggs and milks are fortified with vitamin D, but unfortunately is still not adequate to meet our needs. Vitamin D is essential not only for bone formation and strength, but also promotes calcium absorption in our gut. Check out this awesome article discussing the importance of vitamin D in our diet. Specifically, glance over Table 1 for ideas on supplying vitamin D in your every day diet and look at Figure 1 to see how likely a deficiency is in this particular fat soluble vitamin around the world. Now let us bump up our vitamin D intake and protect our bones!
