✨ Our children build their own calming skills by first borrowing ours. They watch how we handle frustration, overwhelm, or disappointment and their nervous systems learn what safety and recovery can look like.

Next time you feel your own big feelings rising, try pausing and narrating what you are doing:
“I am feeling frustrated. I am going to take three balloon breaths.” 🎈
You are not just calming yourself - you are teaching your child that emotions are safe and manageable and that there are tools to help.

When we model self-regulation, we give kids a real-life script they can copy when life feels big for them.

What calming phrase or action do you want your child to see and hear from you? Share it below to build a library of ideas for other parents.

✨ Change can feel overwhelming for little nervous systems. When kids are asked to stop one activity and start another, their brains and bodies need time and signals to shift. Timers can help, but they are just one tool.

🎵 Songs — short, familiar tunes signal what is coming and help the brain feel safe with predictability.
📸 Photos — a quick picture of the next activity gives a clear visual cue, which is easier to process than words alone.
🚶‍♀️ Movement — jumping, clapping, or spinning before switching tasks gives the body a reset and prepares it for what is next.

These cues support the sensory and emotional systems that make transitions feel manageable. The goal is not just fewer meltdowns, but helping children feel safe and capable when life changes gears.

Save this for the next tough goodbye or activity change so you have ideas ready.

Vertical Surface Play
✨ Using an easel, window, or even the fridge with magnets or dry-erase markers is not just fun. It strengthens shoulder and core stability while encouraging smooth eye movements for reading and writing.
💡 Tip: Tape paper to a wall for coloring, stick Post-its up high for scavenger hunts, or let kids paint on the bathtub walls with washable paint.
Try it this week and tag us.

Ever wondered why your child “flips their lid”? 🧠

Dr. Dan Siegel’s Hand Model of the Brain makes it easy to understand:

Hold up your hand in a fist. Your fingers wrapped over your thumb = the thinking brain (prefrontal cortex).
Your thumb inside = the emotional brain (amygdala).
When kids are calm, the “lid” (thinking brain) is closed and working together.
When overwhelmed, the “lid flips” and the emotional brain takes over.

💡 In those moments, kids cannot access logic, reasoning, or problem-solving. They need connection, calm, and co-regulation before they can “close their lid” again.

🌟 October is Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) Awareness Month 🌟
At Children’s Therapy Center, we know sensory differences are not “bad behaviors.” They are the nervous system’s way of saying this is too much or I need more input.
Kids with SPD might:
✨ Cover their ears at loud sounds
✨ Avoid certain textures or clothing tags
✨ Seek big movement like spinning or crashing
✨ Struggle with focus or transitions
With understanding, support, and the right strategies, kids can feel safe in their bodies and thrive at home, school, and play. That is the heart of what we do every day. 💛
Let’s build awareness, compassion, and tools for sensory needs because when we understand our kids’ sensory worlds, we unlock growth and connection.

Did you know the size of your child’s chair can impact focus, posture, and even handwriting? ✍️

✅ Feet flat on the floor (no dangling!)
✅ Knees bent at 90°
✅ Hips back against the chair
✅ Table height at about elbow level

This is often called the 90-90-90 position where hips, knees, and ankles are all bent at 90 degrees for optimal posture and stability.

When kids are in the right position, their bodies feel supported and their brains can focus on learning, not on staying balanced. 🌟

And this starts early! Even babies and toddlers benefit from supportive seating during mealtimes or play because it helps with safety, core strength, and developing good feeding and fine motor skills. 🍽️👶

💡 Quick fix: If feet do not reach the floor, add a stool or box under them for support.

Every behavior is communication.
✅ A meltdown in the grocery store = overwhelmed senses?
✅ Constant movement = seeking body input?
✅ Refusing to hold a crayon = motor challenge? not laziness.
When we look beneath the surface, we see needs...not “bad” kids. 💙

Comprehensive sensory based occupational therapy clinic in San Jose, CA.

As a parent you have watched your child struggle both at home and at school but haven’t quite been able to put your finger on what is causing the challenge. You notice your child is starting to lose self-confidence and is unwilling to try hard things. It seems like your child has big reactions and becomes upset easily and you don’t know how to help her.

Many children with sensory processing challenges aren’t receiving adequate supports in school or through traditional medical models.

It doesn’t have to be that way. AVCTC is ready to help your child and family feel “Joie de Vivre” (joy in life).
