Health Alert: Stress Disorders Linked to Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the
central nervous system in which the immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord resulting in symptoms
such as numbness, tingling, mood changes, memory problems, pain, fatigue, blindness, and paralysis. An
analysis of data from 26 cohort studies found that individuals with stress disorders (such as post-traumatic stress
disorder) may be nearly two times more likely to develop MS. Additionally, stress disorders triple the risk for
relapse in MS patients. Brain, Behavior & Immunity, June 2024
Diet: Mediterranean Diet Promotes Longevity. The Mediterranean diet is an eating pattern focused on fruit,
vegetables, nuts, fish, olive oil, and whole grains while avoiding red and processed meats, dairy, saturated fats,
and refined sugars. An analysis of data concerning more than 25,000 women found that greater adherence to the
Mediterranean diet pattern is associated with a lower risk of death from either cancer or cardiovascular disease
over a 25-year time frame. JAMA Network Open, April 2024
Exercise: Exercise Can Improve Wellbeing of Caregivers. Meeting the needs of a sick loved one can take a
toll on the mental health of a caregiver. In a recent study, researchers found that participation in a twelve-week
strength training program led to significant improvements in anxiety, depression, and overall quality of life for
caregivers. Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation, April 2024
Chiropractic: Treatment for Cervicogenic Headaches. Cervicogenic headaches are secondary headaches
caused by dysfunction in the neck. A recent study found that manipulative therapy—the primary treatment
provided by doctors of chiropractic— applied to the cervical spine is an effective intervention for reducing
headache frequency and intensity, as well as neck pain and disability. PLOS One, March 2024
Mental Attitude: Light Therapy May Help Heal Injured Brains. New research suggests that pulsing nearinfrared light into the skull of a patient who has sustained a severe concussion can boost energy production in
brain cells, leading to improved blood flow and reduced inflammation, which may aid in recovery.

Wellness/Prevention: Urban Gardening May Boost Skin Health. In a recent experiment, researchers
observed that city dwellers who contributed to an urban garden for one month experienced improved bacterial
diversity on their skin, which may counteract the elevated risk for allergies, asthma, and autoimmune diseases
that have been linked to living in urban areas. Environment International, May 2024
