Happy Fire Horse New Year!
I'd like to share with you a lovely description of what it means to be in a Fire Horse year from Dr. Chloe at Radical Roots herbs.
"Happy Chinese New Year!!
We have entered the Year of the Yang Fire Horse.
In Chinese medicine, the Horse represents the summer solstice — peak yang. Maximum light. Maximum visibility. Maximum outward energy. When you combine that with Fire, which already governs heat, circulation, consciousness, and the Heart, you get a year that amplifies everything.
This is a once-in-sixty-year combination.
Fire governs the Heart in Chinese medicine — and the Heart houses the Shen (your spirit) your clarity, your ability to feel joy without tipping into anxiety. When Fire is balanced, we feel inspired, connected, expressive, alive. When Fire is excessive, we see insomnia, agitation, inflammation, high blood pressure, scattered thinking, emotional volatility.
A Fire Horse year does not create imbalance. It exposes it.
If your nervous system is steady, this year can feel creative and expansive. If you are already overstimulated, underslept, overcaffeinated, and overexposed to stress, this year can feel like intensity layered onto intensity.
Fire is sacred. It is what animates us. But uncontained fire becomes destructive.
We are living in a culture that constantly feeds the flames. Media runs on outrage. Algorithms reward reactivity. Stimulation is endless. Productivity is glorified. Rest is treated like weakness. That is not accidental; dysregulated people are easier to influence and easier to sell to.
The Fire Horse year asks something different of us. It asks for containment.
In five-element theory, Fire must be balanced by Water. That means nourishing yin. Supporting the Kidneys. Restoring depth. Building reserves instead of constantly spending them.
Practically, that looks like this:
Protect your sleep. If the Shen is not anchored, nothing else holds.
Moderate stimulants. Coffee, alcohol, late-night screens, constant news exposure all increase internal heat.Eat in alignment with the season. Lighter meals, more greens, more bitter flavors, less greasy and sugary heat that inflames the system.
Hydrate well. Dryness is a Fire pattern. Constipation, dry skin, dry cough, irritability, feeling brittle — all signs the system needs moisture and grounding.
Move consistently but do not exhaust yourself. The Horse loves movement, but endurance is different from adrenaline.
Build stillness into your day. A few minutes of breathing, quiet, walking, or simply sitting without input is not indulgent. It stabilizes the Heart.
This year will bring innovation and momentum. Historically, Fire Horse years coincide with rapid change and cultural shifts. We will likely see acceleration in technology, strong opinions, bold ideas, and heightened tension. The question is not whether the energy will rise. It will. The question is whether we can hold it without being consumed by it.
Chinese medicine has always been about ecology — the ecology of the body and the ecology of society. When the Heart is clear, perception is clear. When it is overheated, we misinterpret everything.
My intention this year is simple: steady flame, not wildfire.
At Radical Roots, that means continuing to focus on formulas and practices that calm the Heart, move stagnation, and support deep reserves so that you can participate in this year without burning out.
The Fire Horse rewards clarity, creativity, and endurance. It challenges excess, arrogance, and reactivity.
May your fire be strong enough to light your path, and contained enough to protect your home."
