Last fall I broke my foot.

For three months I couldn’t walk or drive. At first my mind went straight to everything I was losing — the movement practices I love, my independence, my routines.

But eventually the question shifted from
“Why is this happening?”
to
“What’s possible now?”

Chair yoga. Seated strength work. Meditation.
And learning the art of being still and present with what was happening during that season of life.

In the Bhagavad Gita, we’re told:
“Yoga is skill in action.”
Yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam.

Not skill in poses — skill in how we respond to what life brings.

Sometimes practice looks like strength and effort.
Sometimes it looks like adapting.

And sometimes what stands in the way… becomes the way.

What has life asked you to adapt to recently?

Yoga is an individual journey and it’s also a collective one.

We come to the mat to listen inward: to notice sensation, breath, thought patterns, conditioning, preferences, and the stories we carry. This inner work matters. It’s where awareness begins.

And… practicing in community amplifies that awareness.
In times like these, when there is so much division, unrest, and uncertainty, spaces where people feel safe, welcome, and respected are essential for healing. A multi-generational room. Many backgrounds. Many identities. One shared practice.

The Yoga Sutras remind us of this in Sutra 1.33, which offers a pathway to peace of mind through our relationships:

Yoga Sūtra 1.33

मैत्रीकरुणामुदितोपेक्षाणां
सुखदुःखपुण्यापुण्यविषयाणां
भावनातश्चित्तप्रसादनम् ॥१.३३॥

Maitrī (friendliness) toward happiness
Karuṇā (compassion) toward suffering
Muditā (appreciative joy) toward integrity
Upekṣā (equanimity) toward what challenges us

Through practicing these relationships, the heart-mind (citta) becomes clear, steady, and spacious.

When we move, breathe, and practice asana together, we get to also practice how to be human together. We gain access to insight more quickly because lived experience is reflected back to us through others.

And that connection doesn’t end when class does.
The people you practice alongside on the mat become part of how the practice extends into the world, into how we listen, how we care, how we respond.

As Rumi so beautifully said:
“You are not a single drop in the ocean. You are the ocean in a single drop.”

Happy New Year! The Winter Season is time for rest and reflection.
Lately, I’ve been spending time with the very beginning of the Yoga Sūtras. Sutra 1.2 lays out the promise of yoga.
योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः
1.2 Yogaḥ citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ
Patañjali tells us that yoga is the settling of the fluctuations of the mind. He then adds in Sutras 1.3 and 1.4 something simple yet powerful: when the mind settles, we rest in our true nature. And at other times… we identify with our thoughts, emotions, and inner stories.
What I love is how closely this mirrors so many modern practices and therapeutic approaches, the idea that we all have different inner voices or patterns, and that healing doesn’t come from getting rid of them, but from changing our relationship to them.
Yoga isn’t asking us to silence the mind or fix ourselves. It’s inviting us to notice when we’re caught up and to gently come back to the part of us that can observe and get curious about whatever’s arising.
For me, this shifts yoga from something we do to something we remember. That remembering becomes a practice we can return to, again and again, both on and off the mat.
One of my favorite quotes from Pema Chodron helps me to remember: “You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather.”

Enjoy this time of rest and reflection. Grab my free “Reflect & Renew” Workbook (link in bio) for intention setting at your own pace.
