Happy Friday families! With so much information circulating about vaccines 💉, we hope you will read this factual article that explains how vaccines are made and how they work. Central Coast Pediatrics 🩺 recommends being informed of the sources of your information 📖, so that you can make evidence based decision regarding your child’s healthcare along with your provider. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ 📚parent website, www.healthychildren.org, is where we hope you will go for evidence based information ℹ️ when you have questions about your child’s health.

By the time a vaccine reaches your child, it has gone through many years of scientific testing and regulatory review. Hhere are the steps involved to ensure the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, from early research to rigorous testing to approval and long-term monitoring.

1. It continues to spread

In light of the current measles outbreak, we would like to share some very important information as we know many of you have questions. Many don’t realize that measles has a death rate of 1/1000 and can cause a serious post-infection encephalitis (a neurologically devastating brain disease) even 10 years after someone has sustained an infection from the measles virus.

CCP recommends vaccines and strives to educate our patients and families on their importance. While we provide care for families who are vaccine hesitant, we do not recommend alternative schedules, but do accommodate for them. Our patient-provider relationship is highly valued by all of the providers at CCP, holding the health of your children as our priority. All are welcome at the offices of CCP. Everyone deserves access to healthcare and a safe space to be treated. CCP is a safe, trusted space and we stand behind the American Academy of Pediatrics in its efforts to ensure that our children's access to healthcare is not compromised.

Tonight in a statement, AAP President Dr. Susan J. Kressly said, "As pediatricians, our number one priority is the health and safety of all children – including children in immigrant families. Many of the Executive Orders and directives issued over the last two days will create fear and hardship for these families by subjecting children—many of whom are U.S. citizens— to the harms of family separation and detention.

The AAP’s own evidence-based policy outlines the harms of practices like family separation and detention on child health, including exposure to toxic stress that can disrupt children's brain architecture and affect their short- and long-term health."
