Common Acupuncture Myths Debunked!⁠

When I started studying Chinese Medicine 20 years ago, it’s safe to say it wasn’t as widely accepted as it is today.⁠
⁠⁠
I remember telling people with much enthusiasm that I was studying to be an acupuncturist and I was often met with some weird looks and some interesting questions. ⁠
⁠
Some of the most laughable now include:⁠
⁠
“Acupuncture? Is that a religion?”⁠ 😂
⁠
“Is there a market for that?”⁠😫
⁠
Or my favorite⁠
⁠
“Acupuncture? Oh yes, I believe in that.”⁠🫣
⁠
All of these are comical now, but at the time it was frustrating to spend most of my time legitimizing my medicine instead of administering it. Looking back at how far the general public has come in their perceptions and beliefs about acupuncture has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. I credit a lot of this movement to practitioners like myself, who have worked to not only provide the very best care but also educate their patients about the medicine we practice and how it can benefit the human body. ⁠

While we have come a long way as far as education, there are still some myths about acupuncture that I have to commonly de-bunk.⁠

Meet our new front office team member Jordan!
Some of you may recognize this young lady because this is Dr. Michelle’s 14 year old daughter❤️
Jordan will be helping out this summer by checking in patients, cleaning rooms and assisting her mom in the clinic. Jordan starts SLOHS in the fall and will play for the volleyball and soccer teams next year. Let’s go Tigers! 🐯 She’s turning out to be a real wizard with anything tech and we have loved having her around. Do we have a budding apprentice acupuncturist in the works? One can only hope- we may be a bit biased but we think she’s the bees knees and hope you will too! 😉

Grief. It’s a human emotion we can’t seem to escape and it’s part of the messy human experience. How do we move through our losses with grace and how do they affect our health?
Traditional Chinese Medicine takes an interesting perspective on emotions - the theory is that our emotions affect our organs, and our unprocessed emotions can make us sick. In a culture where we suppress, numb and do anything to avoid feeling our pain, is it really much of a shock that our mental health is suffering and our physical health isn’t far behind it?
While we might not have all the answers we hope to shed some light on this topic this month - at the Zen Den we take an integrative approach. When you come to us with physical pain more times than not there is an emotional component that we may ask you to get curious about. As your partner in healing, we see your whole body, not just the injured part. If you come in with shoulder pain we may ask, “What does your shoulder want you to know?” Or “what would be the worst thing that would happen if you DIDN’T have this physical pain?” The body speaks to us in a language that it will listen, and our job is to help you learn how to listen. Hoping this helps ❤️

Starting this coming Tuesday 4/2 we’ll be hosting Jamie Dubin’s healing Soundbaths at the Zen Den Tuesday nights 6:30-7:30pm.
Our Soundbaths are unique in that they take place in a warm beautiful candle-lit healing container. Space is limited : you can choose from a zero gravity recliner + infrared heat lamps ($33) or a mat space ($22) bring your own mat. (Please note there will be no acupuncture provided at this event).

What do cupping bruises mean?
The circular marks left behind after a cupping session tend to have the same color as bruises, but despite some minimal skin discomfort (equal to a minor sunburn), they are painless.
The different colors of the bruising can indicate the level of blood and qi stagnation, toxin accumulation, or dampness accumulated in the body. Just like bruises, the color from the cupping mark usually fades away by a week.

Our treatments are affordable, our appointments are accessible and our results are phenomenal!
Acupuncture is a therapy similar to Physical Therapy or Chiropractic care in that it’s a therapy that has a cumulative effect. Studies show that most ailments require 12 visits to fully receive the maximum benefit of acupuncture therapy.
Somewhere along the way when acupuncture became legalized the U.S. in the 80’s we westernized acupuncture, making it more of a spa-like treatment, with most providers seeing patients once a week, while in China most patients are seen 3-7 times a week until the ailment or symptom is resolved.
The Zen Den was created in 2018 with the goal to provide accessible, affordable and highly effective care by treating patients in a group setting at an affordable rate ($33-55) a session or even less with our membership offerings!
