Belly mapping is not new.
It is remembered.

Long before ultrasounds,
traditional midwives across cultures
used their hands as medicine.

From sobadas in Mexico,
to Indigenous birth workers across Turtle Island,
to African, Ayurvedic, and Asian traditions—
hands were the first technology.

Touch was how we listened.
How we learned.
How we honored the womb as sacred space.

Belly mapping today is a reclamation.
A remembering of ancestral ways.
A return to embodied knowing.

It is not just about “position.”
It is about relationship.
Between mother and baby.
Between practitioner and family.
Between past and present.

When we place our hands on the belly,
we are standing in a long lineage
of women who trusted touch
before machines told them what to believe.

This work is ancient.
This work is holy.
This work is an honor.

I had the opportunity to photograph and assist my friend recently and was able to capture this amazing photo of the cord cutting ritual. See the 2 vessels there? Normally there are 3. Feel free to read more about this phenomenon below 👇

The umbilical cord usually contains three blood vessels-two arteries and one vein. However, in about 1% of pregnancies, the cord develops with just one artery and one vein-this is called a Single Umbilical Artery (SUA).
Most babies with SUA are healthy and have no complications.
SUA can occasionally be associated with growth restrictions or kidney or heart abnormalities.
SUA occurs during the formation of the umbilical cord. While the exact cause is unclear, it is usually a random finding and not due to anything the parent did or didn’t do.
