What's the difference between X-Ray, CT Scan, MRI, and more?

X-Ray – Uses electromagnetic radiation to capture images of bones and dense structures within the body. It is commonly used to detect fractures, infections, tumors, and other abnormalities. X-rays are fast, relatively affordable, and widely available.

CT Scan (Computed Tomography) – Combines X-rays with advanced computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the body. Unlike traditional X-rays, CT scans visualize bones, organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues, making them effective for diagnosing internal injuries, tumors, infections, and blood clots.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) – Utilizes a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of soft tissues, organs, and internal structures. It provides excellent contrast between tissue types and is particularly valuable for imaging the brain, spinal cord, joints, and muscles. Since MRI does not use ionizing radiation, it is a safer option, especially for pregnant women and children. However, MRI scans take longer, are more expensive, and may not be suitable for individuals with certain metal implants or medical devices.

PET Scan (Positron Emission Tomography) – Measures metabolic activity in different areas of the body, particularly by detecting glucose (sugar) consumption. Since cancer cells consume large amounts of sugar to fuel rapid growth, they appear as the brightest areas on a PET scan. This imaging technique is commonly used to detect cancerous cells and evaluate their spread.

MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) – A specialized MRI technique that visualizes blood flow within the brain’s vascular system. It is used to detect narrowing, blockages, or abnormalities in blood circulation.

Endogenous melatonin levels peak during the darkest periods of the night, typically 2-4 AM. In addition, at that same time, oxidative stress enzymes, like superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, and even glutathione, are also at their peak. Nighttime, when we are to be sleeping, is our body’s restoration time.

When we miss out on sleep, we miss an opportunity for clearing and cleaning up from the light-filled oxidative bursts of metabolic activity during the day.

Histamine strikes again.

Share this with folks. They need to know their gut symptoms may be caused by a medication.

This time your doctor is causing your high histamine levels. They gave you a medicine that literally blocks your ability to break down histamine.

200 million prescriptions written annually. That means over 100 million people are struggling with gut related side effects caused by Metformin blocking your DAO enzyme.

From a study: “gastrointestinal side effects are common, occurring in up to 75% of those who take metformin (2). These side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and/or flatulence, with severity ranging from mild to severe. These complications are more common with immediate-release preparations of metformin than with its extended-release formulation. Discontinuation and nonadherence rates have been as high as 46% with metformin because of these issues.” PubMed: 33986581

If you’re struggling with these side effects, talk with your doctor to lower your dose, switch medications or adjust your diet.

First, switch to extended release vs immediate release. That may help.

Second, cut carbs and sugar. Stop drinking calories. No alcohol, juice, fancy coffees, sodas.

Third, move. After eating, go for a 10 minute power walk to lower blood sugar.

Fourth, lift weights to get more muscle. Muscle burns glucose while you sleep.

“Sunday self-serve is ready for the week. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 After grocery shopping I always wash and prep all of the food that is considered self-serve in our house. Self-serve for my kiddos means help yourself without asking and it’s always an okay snack (any time of day, bedtime snacks, etc.) It also helps me when I’m packing lunches and snacks, or as a side dish when dinner doesn’t include something they will definitely eat or if we have a busy/late night. There’s something about having things truly ready to grab that makes kids eat it. I could leave the baby carrots in a bag or leave the grapes on the stems but they wouldn’t eat it.” 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ ~ The Eager Teacher

I teach environmental health for The Institute for Functional Medicine, and within the module on this topic, we strongly focus on phytochemicals, and for good reason.
