May is Mental Health Awareness Month💚61.5 million U.S. adults have a mental illness (SAMHSA 2024).

Mental illness can include a large range of disorders, from mild to severe, but all affect a person's thinking, mood, or behavior. We hope everyone can take a moment this month to offer understanding and empathy to those living with a mental health diagnosis and give extra time to take care of their own!

Today is Fentanyl Awareness Day. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than he**in and 100 times stronger than morphine. In 2024, 49% of overdose deaths in SLO County included fentanyl.

Naloxone, the life-saving overdose reversal nasal spray, is the easiest way to reverse a fentanyl overdose. We recommend learning how to use it.

Naloxone can be obtained at all SLO Behavioral Health clinics, NaloxBox community access sites, pharmacies, and through the mail for free at www.NaloxoneNowSLO.org. Take action, save a life, and carry Naloxone!

April 9th is National Alcohol Screening Day. Understanding what counts as a "standard drink" is a key step in managing your health. Did you know that one standard drink isn't always one glass? It depends on the type of alcohol:
🍺 12 fl oz of regular beer (~5% ABV)
🍷 5 fl oz of wine (~12% ABV)
🥫 8-10 fl oz of malt beverage (~7% ABV)
🥃 1.5 fl oz of distilled spirits (~40% ABV)
Knowing these sizes helps you stay within recommended limits and make informed choices. Take a moment today to reflect on your alcohol habits and reach out for help and support if you need it.

- Log onto www.cdc.gov/alcohol/CheckYourDrinking to take an alcohol use quiz
- Reach out to the SLO Sobering Center got sobering support services: (820) 280-0415
- Visit SLO County Behavioral Health during Drug and Alcohol Services Walk-In hours to receive a screening.
- Call SLO Behavioral Health to explore screening and treatment options for you or your loved one: (800) 838-1381

Below are four illustrations representing one standard drink each: a 12 fl oz mug of regular beer, a 5 fl oz glass of wine, an 8-10 fl oz can of malt beverage, and a 1.5 fl oz shot of liquor with a lime wedge. A bracket underneath all four icons labels them collectively as "A STANDARD DRINK."

Funding for the NaloxBox program comes from SLO County’s Opioid Settlement Funds and the California Department of Health Care Services through a contract with the California Overdose Prevention Network, a program of the Public Health Institute.
The program aligns with California laws, including the 9-1-1 Good Samaritan Law and the Overdose Treatment Act, which protect those who administer naloxone in good faith from legal repercussions.

Trigger Warning: These images may be upsetting, but are of a part of a staged car crash.
Last week Behavioral Health's SLO County SLO County Friday Night Live program carried out a simulated drunk driving traffic collision at Atascadero High School as part of the part of the “Every 15 Minutes” program. The simulation gave students the opportunity to learn first hand from local police, fire, first responders, parents, DUI prevention specialists, and their teachers the consequences of drunk driving.

We want all our SLO County students, families, and community members to have a safe and enjoyable Spring Break. PLEASE do not get behind the wheel if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and STAND UP if you see someone else make this risky, possible life-ending decision. Call a sober friend, family member, ride share or stay put.

We cannot thank the following partners enough for their continued collaboration and dedication to bring Every Fifteen Minutes to students on the Central Coast:
