The scapegoat is the most dangerous person in a toxic workplace.

Not because they harm people, but because they tell the truth that no one wants to hear.

They’re the ones who say what everyone knows but avoids, ignores, or denies.

The ones who call a spade a spade even when it’s been rebranded as collaboration or culture fit. They:

- name what others only hint at
- break the code of silence
- expose dysfunction that others enable
- won’t downplay the problem to make leadership feel comfortable.

At first, they’re praised for being brave. Then, they’re labeled negative...before they're pushed out.

In a self-protective system, naming the truth is an act of rebellion. It threatens the comfort of those invested in keeping things just broken enough to maintain control. So the truth teller becomes the scapegoat.

They’re cast as:
“Too intense”
“Not a team player”
“Hard to manage”
“A bad cultural fit”

Because they made it impossible to keep pretending.

If you’ve been scapegoated for naming the truth, it’s not proof you were the problem. It’s proof the system wasn’t ready to look in the mirror, let alone be accountable.

15 Sentences to shift your mindset 🤗

10/27/2024

"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh.
There was a pause.
"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.
"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."
"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.
"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.
"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.
"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."
And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right."
A.A. Milne
Sending thoughts to those having a Difficult Day today and hope you have your own Piglet to sit beside you.
