What is the trait you most value in a person? For many people, it's the thing they needed most as a child. Patient, calm, loyal, kind, organized, accepting, authentic....there are so many traits it's hard to narrow it down.

"Reliabile" is a critical trait. Every time you show up, every time you are present, you're telling someone they are important to you. You're telling him/her they matter to you. You're showing him/her how valuable they are to you. Reliability is a foundational trait. It's necessary for intimacy and trust to grow in all relationships. Never underestimate the power of your consistent presence. ❤

Responding consistently with patience and love is far more effective than reactive punishment. How we respond to kids shapes their behavior in permanent ways. What skills do you want them to learn from you? , , , , , , , ❤

I've been a counselor for 20 years. It's no secret that attitudey teenagers are my favorite. They're a tough crowd. They push back, they test, they give me the silent treatment, they sometimes call me names. They're mistrustful. They're moody and fickle. They build walls for me to climb. They tell me I'm ruining their lives. They refuse to get out of the car sometimes. They occasionally tell their parents I'm mean to them. Sometimes they twist my words and use them against their parents. They can be moody and unpredictable. They can be incredibly self-absorbed and demanding. Sometimes they're angry. Sometimes they're sad. Sometimes they're scared. Sometimes they're anxious....but ALL the time, they are lovable and fill my days with purpose. The greatest rewards in my life are those attitudey teenagers who have grown up to become happy and hard working adults. Some are parents who make me laugh when they express frustration over the antics of their own kids (karma). They are now counselors and social workers, police officers, military members, firemen, lawyers, welders, construction workers, business men and women, nurses, teachers...they are helpers and their mere presence in this world makes it a better place. Perhaps most importantly, they are strong, resilient adults who get back up and keep going when times are tough. If you're one of those kids, I'd love to hear your favorite counseling moment with me!

Sometimes we push too hard. Sometimes we force things that aren't meant to be. Sometimes, our own expectations set us up for failure. The older we get, the more we realize that our strength lies in our flexibility, in our ability to bounce back and keep going. Once we accept that we can't control everything, the easier life becomes. Shout out to all the brave souls flying and bumping through life without a seat belt and with a smile. May we always find peace and joy wherever we land. ❤
