Triggerpoint Therapy is the cutting edge of myofascial release and chronic pain resolution.

Triggerpoints are tiny little inflamed sarcomeres, stuck in contraction, that can be found along the muscle fibers. You can learn to find and resolve triggerpoints through direct manipulation aka massage or myotherapy.

Sarcomeres are contractile units on the muscle fibers. Neurons connect to the sarcomeres and tell our muscles to contract by releasing the neurochemical acetylcholine onto the sarcomere. There are numerous reasons that sarcomeres will stay stuck in contraction.

Lack of blood flow/circulation
Inadequate Mineral Balance
Repetitive Use
Chronic Sympathetic (Stress) State
Metabolic Issues

Weight - Stress Connection

When we are in a sympathetic (stress) state our body has evolved to run off of glucose (sugar). This is because glucose will give us a quick burst of energy which would get out quickly out of harms way, or give us the energy to fight and live.

In a sympathetic state we burn glucose...not fat.

Certain foods can cause our body to go into this state (processed foods, pesticides, toxins, trans fats, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, refined flour), because they create an inflammatory response which our brain interprets as danger. Work stress, driving on the highway, postural imbalances, relationship issues, finances, etc. can also trigger a sympathetic response.

When we are running on glucose our brain will tell us we need to refuel before we actually do because it wants to be able to keep us out of danger...triggering cravings for carbs and/or sweets. Over time this will affect our blood glucose levels, insulin production, hormones, and neurochemicals.

If you are trying to manage your weight, start by managing your stress and the quality of food you intake. Aim for a low glycemic diet. Seek out ways to activate a parasympathetic response in your body. Think hormones. Get intimate with your energy. You got this!

The Vagus Nerve is the longest nerve in the body and is an information highway that innervates our gut creating the gut brain axis. If inflammation is present in the gut our brain gets a signal within milliseconds that something is wrong. This can create a stress response and a feeling of dis-ease. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet and toning the vagus nerve will significantly help to create a sense of balance and inner calm.
