Teen relationships play a major role in how young people learn about love, respect and communication. For many adolescents, a first romantic relationship becomes a blueprint for what feels “normal.” When that relationship is healthy, it helps build confidence and self‑worth. When it isn’t, unhealthy patterns can follow them into adulthood.
At San Marcos Treatment Center, we see how tough it can be for teens to recognize the difference. Many believe intensity equals love, but it doesn’t.
If a teen realizes their relationship is not healthy, these steps can help:
• Talk to a trusted adult such as a parent, counselor, coach or therapist.
• Create space and set clear boundaries.
• Lean on friends and support systems.
• Document concerning behavior if needed.
• Seek professional support if the situation feels overwhelming or unsafe.
When teens learn early what healthy relationships look like, they are better prepared to form safe and respectful connections throughout their lives.
Parents, caregivers, educators and providers all play a role in helping teens see the signs. Every teen deserves to feel safe, respected and valued.
