Who Is This Guy?

The end goal of therapy is fulfillment, peace, and life in all its fullness. It is to be who you are, to feel within you the good that has no opposite. It is to experience true salvation, that is, to know who you really are in the same way that God knows you. True salvation is to know yourself as an inseparable part of God (Jn 17:20-23). Our work will be identifying suffering that exists in your life, how thought and experience influence suffering, and how change should occur so life can be experienced in a different way.

This involves a heightened understanding of how your experience of the past impacts your present. By changing your interpretation of the past, you can change the beliefs of the present by viewing it from the perspective of a bigger picture, the context, than from the narrowed focus of the thinking mind.

My name is Ryan Buchmann and I am a California-licensed marriage and family therapist. I received my masters degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in 2007 and I became licensed as a therapist in 2011. In addition to my education as an MFT, I also hold a masters degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling from the University of San Diego which I received in 2005. Further, I am certified as an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor through the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP) since 2015. To see my work history, click here.

You are probably here because you are somehow suffering. I have strived to integrate spirituality with therapy. I believe that human suffering is part of life, but it doesn't always have to be this way. I can teach you to become more aware of the thoughts and beliefs that cause you to suffer. By learning how to choose to think and believe differently, we can alleviate the suffering we are experiencing in the moment. By becoming more aware of the moments in which we are suffering, we can repeat these shifts until they become habit. In other words, we condition ourselves to believe and behave differently and eventually the suffering diminishes. In so few words, this is the teaching of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. We accept that the present moment is as it is and allow it to be without getting consumed by our emotional response to it. Then we commit to removing the emotional and thought-based barriers that prevent us from living up to our values, that which we have determined to be important to us. By mastering this ability on a consistent basis, we can move toward more peace in life.
