I am the mother of three SMCISD students, a wife, and a writer. My husband, Jeff Helgeson, a history professor at Texas State University, and I have been married for 19 years. I have a child at Crockett Elementary, one at Miller Middle School, and one at San Marcos High School. I was born and raised in a small town in Iowa and my family and I have lived in San Marcos since 2010. My dad was a public school teacher and my mother was a public school nurse. I am a proud product of—and champion for—public schools. I know that public education is the backbone of any healthy community and I possess a deep sense of obligation to serve the community of San Marcos by doing what I can to contribute to the great strides made by the hardworking educators of our school district. I am committed to representing the best interests of ALL of the students of SMCISD and I bring a common sense voice to the board for parents and community members. I work as a stay-at-home mother and writer. I spend a considerable amount of time reviewing homework, packing snacks, and serving as the family taxi to my children’s various activities. You can frequently find me on the sidelines of two or more baseball games or soccer matches, wearing my mask and depending on the season. I co-founded the SMTX Mental Health Coalition and serve on the Core Four Task Force, the San Marcos Education Foundation, the Hays & Caldwell Early Childhood Coalition, and the SMTX Hunger Free Coalition. I previously served on the City of San Marcos Commission on Children and Youth, City of San Marcos Historic Preservation Commission, and the Board of Directors of the Presbyterian Parent Cooperative Preschool in San Marcos. Prior to moving to Texas, I directed the non-profit Poetry Foundation’s initiative to expand the presence of poetry in the media. I graduated from Macalester College and received my MFA at New York University. Your questions, comments, and concerns are always welcome. Please feel free to message me here or find me on Twitter at https://twitter.com/anne_halsey. Thanks so much for your support. It's a great day to be a Rattler, y'all! XO

San Marcos COSD Superintendent Statement on Uvalde CISD

San Marcos CISD Family,

We are devastated and saddened to hear the news about the incident that took place today in Uvalde CISD. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Uvalde community during these very difficult times.

We want to reassure our San Marcos CISD community that police presence at our schools will be on high alert during the last few days of school. SMCISD will not tolerate any behavior that may lead us to believe that there is a threat to our students and staff. We want to reiterate that the safety and well-being of the entire San Marcos CISD family is paramount and we will do everything to protect that.

SMCISD encourages our families to share safety concerns through the Rattler tip line by using the link provided https://www.smcisd.net/Page/3984 or by reaching out to your campus administrator, and/or Safety Director, Doug.Wozniak@smcisd.net.

Again, we ask that you keep the Uvalde community in your thoughts as they deal with this tragic situation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Cardona

Superintendent of Schools
