I always get nostalgic around The Family Room’s anniversary and end up looking at old pictures.

I sometimes forget just how little all three of my girls were when I opened the doors at our first space! My kids have grown up at The Family Room, too. Also, what was I thinking starting a business with three small children. 🫠

It was a bit (or very!) chaotic in the best way, because I knew the mission of The Family Room was so much bigger than me. We have all grown — me, them and our community. Thank you for sharing this space with us! 💗 Karen

It was 16 years ago this past Monday that I moved from Boston to Los Angeles as a newly divorced single mom. This picture was taken the moment before we left for the airport.

It is a picture of the immense strength in community and what happens when people show up for you. These were my neighbors in our building who became my friends and then my family. There were so many other friends not pictured, many I met at the playground and Mommy & Me, who held up both me and Audrey.

It is also a picture of a terrified mother with the daunting prospect of rebuilding a life in Los Angeles trying to hold it together. It is my personal reminder of stepping boldly into uncertainty, and that taking care of ourselves is taking care of our children. That through our actions, not our words, we truly teach.⁣
⁣
That experience as a young mother is deeply connected to my passion to support moms and without it I would not have had the courage to start The Family Room. Knowing the power of community, just five years later, I sought to build one for parents, particularly mothers, and opened The Family Room. It is with immense gratitude I continue to find myself in the position to hold up mothers, just like what was done for me.⁣
⁣
And to anyone in a place of uncertainty who needs to hear this today, I hope you find your voice and your path. love, Karen
