Hello it’s been a while since I have introduced myself.

My name is Arwa and I am originally from Mumbai, India. I currently live in Texas with my husband and 2 kids. I am a physical therapist and extremely passionate about helping older adults overcome their fear of falling so that they can continue to live an active and a healthy lifestyle. Also providing support to their family members and caregivers.

I lost my maternal grandma (I called her Nani) who I was extremely close to at a very early age of 65 years due to multiple health problems. Since then I consider "our health" to be one of the greatest gifts we can have and that is why I take these 3 things very seriously

1. Exercise-I move my body for 30 to 45 mins everyday. On the weekends this includes running in the park with my kids or going for stroller walks.

2. Sleep-I strive to get at least 7 hours of sleep in 24 hours.

3. Nutrition-We are currently living in a world where access to ultra processed food is very easy. I love geeking out on labels and looking at ingredients and figuring out a safe swap for snacks, food etc. I also include a lot of raw food in my diet.

I also love trying different outdoor activities and have tried Ziplining, Deep Sea diving, Snorkeling, Rafting, Skydiving, Rope River walking. Next thing on my list is Bungee Jumping.

I consider myself as an introvert and do well in a small group setting and enjoy making deep connections. I also enjoy alone time with a book or Netflix or a good podcast. Currently listening to the Model Health Show and loving it.

My friend -wins and I have decided to run 1 mile a day for the next 30 days and be accountability partners.

The goal is to get better at our own personal times. Since it is only 1 mile a day it is something which is easy to do and does not need a lot of our time.

Along with running we are also strength training 4-5 times a week. Strength training will help us
-Improve our running speed
-Prevent Injuries

As I have mentioned before, running without strength training can lead to injuries. Use strength training to help you improve your performance and functional ability tasks such as:
-Walk faster
-Sit on the floor
-Rise from the chair
-Climb up/down stairs

We are using strength training to help us run faster.

It is extremely important that you or your loved ones include strength training at least 3-4 times a week if you are at a high fall risk or have had a previous fall.

Walking is great but you need resistance and balance training to improve your walking form and endurance. Just walking will not make you stronger.

Moving your body in different directions helps in challenging different muscles in your body and helps to improve your balance.

2️⃣ Provide good stability such as a firm heels
3️⃣ Textured sole to prevent slipping

Practice each stretch for 15 seconds and repeat it 2x

Pool Safety for your loved ones πŸ‘‡

1️⃣ The area outside the pool is not slippery. Encourage them to wear footwear with good grips

2️⃣ Do not let them swim alone. Get in the pool with them or sit close by to give them company without making them feel that they cannot swim by themselves

3️⃣ Make sure there are railings to get in and out of the pool which are safe and secure

4️⃣ There are no obstacles around the pool such as the pool pump, water hose or pots that can lead to a trip or fall

If you have a client who is at a high fall risk and/or has difficulty in walking by themselves please consider using a gait belt.

Make sure you stand close to them and towards their side. Do not stand in front of them to avoid blocking their way and hence avoid any trips or falls
βœ… A Gait belt around them for safety especially people with dresses or hospital gowns
βœ… Clear the clutter from the floor to avoid falls
