Dementia Tip: When your loved one gets upset or lashes out, pause before correcting or explaining.

Try saying: “I’m here with you. You’re safe.”

Then offer calm presence—a gentle tone, a soft touch, a familiar song.
Meet the fear with safety.

❌ Don’t argue with confusion.
Behavior is communication. Respond with compassion.

Dementia Tip: Listen for the Feeling

When a loved one says, "I need to pick up the kids..."
(don’t correct them)

Try this instead: “You’ve always taken such good care of your family.”

Then gently redirect: “Let’s get lunch ready while we wait.”

Validation builds trust. ❌ Facts aren’t always helpful.
Meet the emotion, not the memory.

While the nation honors its founding, we're also honoring the freedom to age, heal, and thrive at home — with dignity, compassion, and a little extra time to watch the fireworks from the front porch.

At Home-Based Medicine, we believe healthcare should meet people where they are — not the other way around. On this Fourth of July, we're grateful for:

The independence of our patients, however they define it
The trust of families who invite us into their homes
And the privilege of practicing medicine without waiting rooms or parking hassles

Here’s to house calls, porch visits, and the revolutionary idea that care can be personal and portable.

Happy 4th of July from our team to yours!

National Picnic Day is a Day to Nourish Body and Spirit

Picnics are more than just meals—they’re an opportunity to enjoy nature, connect with others, and take a deep breath of fresh air.

Whether it's a sandwich in the garden, a thermos of tea on the porch, or a walk to a sunny bench, the spirit of National Picnic Day can be enjoyed by everyone—regardless of mobility.

Why picnics matter for older adults:

Boosts mood and reduces stress
Encourages gentle movement and fresh air
Promotes hydration and appetite
Creates connection—something we all need
Tip: Bring easy-to-eat snacks, wear a hat or bring shade, and make sure there’s water to sip and a comfy seat nearby.

Let the outdoors be your dining room today—even if it's just a blanket by an open window.
