The PPD test (Purified Protein Derivative test), also known as the Mantoux tuberculin skin test, is used to determine if someone has been infected with tuberculosis (TB) bacteria.

Here's how it works:

-Injection: A small amount of PPD tuberculin is injected just under the skin of the forearm.

-Wait 48–72 hours: The patient returns after 2 to 3 days for a healthcare provider to check the injection site.

-The provider measures the size of the raised, firm area (induration), not the redness.

Interpretation depends on risk factors and immune status.
