Masks are coming off - Smiles are shining! 😁 I’ve been hard at work creating transformative treatments like this. Can you guess the treatment?

I customized the shape and coloration of the teeth to match this patient’s youthful and fun personality. While we treated her whole mouth, we were able to maintain a very natural esthetic. She is now able to eat, speak, and laugh without concern!

I could go into detail about the science behind the 5 appointment process—the impressions that give the dentures a no-adhesive-needed fit, the bite record to ensure the teeth occlude and function effectively— but the magic in these teeth to me is the personality.

There’s a definite artistic aspect to recreating a smile:
•Choosing the size, shape, and color of the teeth
•Positioning those teeth relative to the lips and other facial features
•Aligning your vision and expectation with that of the patient

Artistry is such a fun aspect of these treatments to me and often the flexibility in customization surprises patients.

Smile makeover for a patient with old bonding on her #7 peg lateral, an old crown on RCT #9, a diastema at #9/10, and mesioverted #10.

This patient was treated with 2 crowns and 2 veneers. It was a challenging treatment and the patient didn’t want to undergo crown lengthening on #7 or internal bleaching on #9, but overall we were both very pleased with the results!

As an Art History major I learned you could recognize the excellence in a Greek or Roman sculptor by examining the backside of his sculptures. If the butts were nicely shaped and polished, the artist was meticulous and paid attention to detail even on the parts most overlooked....

I feel the same way about the lingual of anterior restorations. Only other dentists would see this... I love the lingual grooves and shape here. I bet you can guess that the facial is 🙌🏻 as well!

What kind of die system do you use? I’m a fan of making individual dies with my first pour and then making a solid cast with a second pour. The first die is for adaptation and marination; the solid cast is for proximal contacts. Digital design software like 3shape, used to make zirconia crowns like these, have you scan the die first then the whole cast— same idea. Capture the detail of the die and then the relationship of the die to the arch.

Tissue health under prostheses: I like to fine tune not only the esthetics and function with the provisional/prototype, but also hygiene access. I worked with the patient to deepen grooves on the intaglio into which she could fit superfloss and maintain healthy tissue. 😁
The photo was taken after nearly 4 months wearing the acrylic provisional. Look at that healthy tissue 😍🙌🏻

Shout out to the fabulous lab techs out there that make us look good 🙌🏻. I always try to communicate and give as much information as possible to my lab technicians. As one of my mentors puts it “you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t” 😂

13 denture arches completed by 5 prosthodontists and 1 lab technician in 3 days for the Omaha tribe in Nebraska. Thankful for the opportunity to go on this outreach trip provided by the PCSP and AP 😁 @ Onawa, Iowa
