Beacon House The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a long-term substance abuse recovery center You can learn more at www.thebeaconhouse.org.

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a state-certified, residential substance abuse recovery program for men with a sincere desire to achieve long-lasting abstinence from drugs and alcohol. As residents of the Beacon House, the men are provided with food, shelter, counseling, peer group support, educational opportunities and career training through social enterprise programs, including a T

hrift Shop. This allows the men to develop the life, career and social skills they need to build a foundation in recovery, while preparing them for a strong reintegration into the job market and a bright future when they return to their family, home and community. Recently named one of the best addiction treatment centers in the United States by Newsweek Magazine, men from 39 states across the country have received treatment at Beacon House. The organization has grown over the past 50 years to encompass a full city block in San Pedro, California, adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles, including six residential facilities with the capacity to house 110 residents, as well as a kitchen/dining facility. With the support of our donors and the local community, we have helped thousands of men get a second chance at life and regain their place as responsible, productive members of society.

There was a time when Peter’s entire world revolved around getting high. All his other responsibilities, relationships, and desires took a backseat to his addiction. His life was driven by an obsession that felt permanent, like something he would never escape.

Today, nearly two years into recovery, that obsession no longer controls him. The constant pull, that relentless need has been lifted. This is a fact that still amazes him. Peter knows this change didn’t happen just because he wanted it—it was only possible because of God’s incredible grace and mercy.

Our men recently experienced an incredible night at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, taking in a live performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. To hear world-class musicians playing works by Beethoven and Schumann has the power to inspire.

For our men, life in active addiction felt small and limited. But today, recovery is creating space for new experiences, perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for what life has to offer them.

Our men were invited to the Norwegian Seamen’s Church today for some burgers and good company.

It’s one thing to live next door to someone, but it’s something else to be a true neighbor. Neighbors support one another, extend kindness, and watch out for each other.

We’ve been grateful to call Sjømannskirken i Los Angeles our neighbor for decades. Their generosity and willingness to invest time and care into our community is a bright spot for our men.

At Beacon House, we love helping men build a strong foundation for life after treatment. While we hope for lifelong sobriety for every graduate, our role is to ensure they leave with the strongest start possible.

During our sober living phase, residents focus on education, managing finances, and planning for the future. Once they achieve key milestones—such as securing employment, transportation, and independent housing—they are ready for the next chapter.

We recently celebrated that moment with three men: Eloy, Joe, and Juan. Our community gathered and listened as each man shared his journey and the profound hope that recovery makes possible. We look forward to seeing their continued success as they navigate their lives in recovery.

Wayne arrived at Beacon House after years of drinking and using drugs, carrying the weight of a difficult childhood and a deep sense that he wasn’t equipped to handle life. For a very long time, substances allowed him to run away from those feelings.

At first, he struggled to open up about the emotions he had carried for years. With the support of staff and peers, he gradually began to trust the process, share honestly, and accept help. As time went on, he learned to take ownership of his past and committed to changing his actions moving forward. He began building a stronger spiritual foundation and a new way of living.

Today, Wayne has reconnected with his sons and is actively working toward a career as an electrician. More importantly, he’s building a life where he can be present, dependable, and no longer feels the need to run.

A group of our men recently had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with the good folks over at Equine Empowered Training (EET) in the foothills of Orange County.

EET, a Southern California nonprofit, is dedicated to sharing practical, compassionate, and accessible equine education. With over a decade of experience supporting veterans and their families, they now serve a broader audience through stories, strategies, and step-by-step tools that teach people the language of the horse.

Spending the afternoon alongside their incredible horses, our men learned to communicate with authenticity, build trust, and stay grounded in the present moment. As they were guided through various techniques and practices, they expressed how peaceful they felt inside. Oftentimes, we find that when we slow things down, we become more open to connection.

We’re less than a month away from the 9th Annual Beacon House Golf Tournament, and we can hardly wait!

We’re nearly sold out for golfers at the beautiful Virginia Country Club, and it’s shaping up to be an incredible day on the course. But the experience doesn’t end there.

The evening program will feature a great dinner, a powerful recovery story from a Beacon House alumnus, as well as silent and live auctions filled with unique items our men have worked hard to secure from local businesses.

If you love Beacon House but aren’t a golfer, joining us for the dinner program is a fun and meaningful way to get involved and support our mission of helping men recover from alcoholism and addiction.

Before coming to Beacon House, Brandon’s alcoholism had progressed into a life-threatening dependency. By his 30s, his drinking had led to seizures, repeated hospital visits, and terrifying isolation.

At Beacon House, he began to confront himself honestly for the first time. He learned that his thinking and his choices had fueled his troubles, and that by developing the ability to process emotions and relinquish control, he could rebuild his life.

While in the program, he earned his culinary certifications from LA Harbor College and today is proud to be Head Chef at Beacon House. He is engaged to a wonderful woman with a wedding set for July, and they’re excited to begin building a family together.

Faith plays an important role in the recovery process, and the men in our program are encouraged to explore what that looks like for them personally.

This Easter, many chose to attend various church services across the Harbor Area. While surrounded by other people of faith, something deeper is often felt.

No matter where they started—grounded in faith, curious and searching, or beginning again—each man experienced a sense of connection with themselves, others, and with something greater.

In today’s society, it’s easy to take little things for granted. Most people don’t think twice about where their next meal is coming from, often grabbing something quick as they head out the door.

But for the men in our program, those “little things” are important.

Every day at the Bartlett Center, each man receives three hot meals made with care in our kitchen. Mealtimes are a chance to slow down, sit together, and be part of something.

One of our newer residents put it best: “You know, when I was out there [on the streets], I would get so depressed. It was really hard to eat alone all the time. Now, getting to eat with a hundred dudes…it’s beautiful.”

The Bartlett Center holds a special place in our hearts for this reason.

Work hard. Play hard. That’s how we do it at Beacon House.

Recently, our men went to Six Flags Magic Mountain, where they sprinted from ride to ride, chased the shortest lines, and soaked up every second of adrenaline and sunshine along the way. What more could a guy want?

In early recovery, it can be difficult to imagine a life beyond partying and drinking alcohol. To some, that idea sounds monotonous and incredibly boring. That's why days like this are important. They teach our men that there is so much more to life than what's found in the bottom of a bottle.
