Beacon House The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a long-term substance abuse recovery center You can learn more at www.thebeaconhouse.org.

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a state-certified, residential substance abuse recovery program for men with a sincere desire to achieve long-lasting abstinence from drugs and alcohol. As residents of the Beacon House, the men are provided with food, shelter, counseling, peer group support, educational opportunities and career training through social enterprise programs, including a Thrift Shop. This allows the men to develop the life, career and social skills they need to build a foundation in recovery, while preparing them for a strong reintegration into the job market and a bright future when they return to their family, home and community. Recently named one of the best addiction treatment centers in the United States by Newsweek Magazine, men from 39 states across the country have received treatment at Beacon House. The organization has grown over the past 50 years to encompass a full city block in San Pedro, California, adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles, including six residential facilities with the capacity to house 110 residents, as well as a kitchen/dining facility. With the support of our donors and the local community, we have helped thousands of men get a second chance at life and regain their place as responsible, productive members of society.

For our men, New Year's Eve used to be a night full of wild behavior, blurry moments, and soon-to-be hangovers. Many used to believe that they needed to be drunk to have fun, as it was oftentimes the only way to feel comfortable in a crowd or to find the courage to hit the dance floor.

But at our New Year’s Eve dance, they discovered the joy of letting go of fear. Caught up in the music, they didn’t have to worry about looking cool or fitting in. They realized they were among friends. Moments like these are where “staying sober” turns into “loving life.”

New Year’s resolutions often fail when goals are unrealistic or rooted in all-or-nothing thinking. The truth is that a flash of sudden motivation or wishful thinking isn't enough to sustain a new life. Real transformation is a slow, steady process that unfolds through consistent effort, honest self-reflection, and a strong support system.

This change requires us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. We break old patterns by practicing contrary action: the daily work of fighting unhelpful impulses to make room for new growth. It’s not about following our instincts, it's about building the character to move past them.

In recovery, we trade the quick fix for a firm foundation. While the path will have its obstacles, remember that the most meaningful changes are never instantaneous. Start today, exactly where you are.

When Eric arrived at Beacon House in 2022, he had no idea how much his life was about to change. He had a desire to one day reunite with his kids, but at the beginning of this process, that seemed impossibly far away.

Healing didn’t happen quickly. It took time, and it took a program that refused to rush the process. Eric was given what he needed to rebuild his foundation brick by brick.

And finally, one day he walked out of Beacon House, into a new life with his kids.

At Beacon House, we believe healing takes time, and every life is worth that investment. Your year-end gift helps us expand our reach, so more struggling men can receive the long-term, life-saving support they deserve.

Give now and help a man take his first step toward healing:

The Beacon House Christmas Skits are a December tradition that challenges our men in the best way. Each of our five houses spends weeks preparing—writing scripts, rehearsing, and learning how to work as a team, before taking the stage together.

This year’s skits did not disappoint. We had everything from a mischievous elf trying to ruin Christmas to a tale of redemption for Peter Pan after his drinking had caused him to push away the Lost Boys. We even got to rock out to a special performance by our Beacon House band, the Knuckleheads.

Which house had the best skit? Well, we can't say there was a clear winner, but what was clear was that these guys are really talented and definitely enjoyed themselves.

Bravo, men!

Christmas morning sparkled in San Pedro as Santa Claus and his elves rolled into town. Santa had a little trouble with his sleigh this year, so he arrived aboard a big red LAFD firetruck. Despite the threat of rain, we experienced a true Christmas miracle with blue skies overhead.

Children lined up and eagerly awaited their chance to meet the Big Man himself. Our Beacon House elves were out in full force, spreading contagious smiles and handing out extra special gifts to every child. We even had an entire Grinch family show up – but after some time with our elves and a photo with Santa, we’re happy to report that their hearts grew three sizes!

Our men look forward to giving back to our community in this way each year. Many of our residents know what it’s like to face a difficult holiday season, so being able to put smiles on children’s faces and lighten the load for their families is truly a blessing.

Fred is grateful for the chance to give back. For much of his life, his alcoholism kept him turned inward — more focused on getting through the day than on building meaningful connections. Relationships were difficult, and alcohol became a way to cope with the isolation he felt.

Recovery has changed Fred’s priorities. Today, he finds fulfillment in welcoming new men to Beacon House and helping them feel comfortable from the start. He’s steady and approachable, someone they know they can talk to. Being away from his own family this holiday season has deepened his appreciation for community, and he enjoys showing new residents how Beacon House can feel like home.

Excitement filled the air as our men walked the neighborhood sidewalks of Torrance's iconic Candy Cane Lane. Surrounded by glowing lights, holiday music, and joyful faces, the experience felt special from the moment they arrived.

Being away from their families during the holidays can be tough for our men, but nights like this remind them that they're not alone. Sharing these moments with their Beacon House family shifts the focus from what's missing to the hope of what's being built in recovery.

Our resident interns recently enjoyed a day out on the town to celebrate all the hard work they’ve put in over the past year. Through their internships, these men are gaining experience and building skills that can shape their future careers.

But this day was about having fun. Sharing a good lunch and catching a movie together gave everyone a chance to relax and enjoy the rewards of consistent effort.

We’re proud of the dedication these men continue to show, in and out of the office.

The Beacon House staff recently celebrated the season with a festive Holiday Party at Raffaello Ristorante in San Pedro. Our team shows up every day with dedication, passion, and purpose, so it was nice to take an evening to relax and just enjoy each other’s company. The night was filled with lots of laughter, with the highlight being the fierce competition to win the ugly holiday sweater contest. At the end of the night, everyone left feeling appreciated, uplifted, and with a shared pride in the work we do and the team we do it with.

Thank you, Westerly Photobooths, for helping us capture such fun memories of the night!

Seven years ago, Matt had reached his breaking point. He was on the run from the law, unemployed, strung out, and had no idea what his next move was going to be. The worst part was that the drugs were no longer working to numb his crippling fear and depression. He needed a miracle. In a moment of desperation, he called his mom and asked her if he could come back home to California. She agreed, but only if he came to Beacon House.

Once in the program, honesty became the catalyst for real change. Letting go of the lies he used for survival allowed him to finally receive the help he needed. As his relationship with his Higher Power grew, it began to positively impact the way he viewed himself and others. His heart softened and he saw that he was really changing on the inside.

Today, he is married, working at Beacon House, active in AA, and building a life rooted in purpose and growth. He stays on track by remaining teachable, looking to see what he can contribute to situations, and recognizing that he doesn't have to be perfect. "Life is pretty good," he says.

When Eric arrived at Beacon House, he was certain that his life had lost all meaning. Years of addiction and homelessness had left him hopeless. Today, more than three years later, his life tells a different story. He’s completed his education, has reunited with his children, and has become an example of what transformation truly looks like. But most importantly, he has found meaning and purpose again.

Eric’s journey tells us something important: lasting recovery takes time. Most men have battled addiction for years. That’s why they also need years to fully rebuild their lives. But we’re at capacity, with more men reaching out for help every day. With more beds and more space, we can welcome new residents while allowing others the necessary time they need to heal, grow, and thrive.

Eric’s new life was possible because there was a bed available to him and no time limit for him to build a solid foundation.

Our men were honored to be invited to a staged reading of 𝐴 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑚𝑎𝑠 𝐶𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑙 this week, presented by the Waterfront Arts District - San Pedro. It was an evening filled with plenty of holiday cheer. The cast was composed of actors and community members with a passion for the arts. To top it off, our men enjoyed an impromptu photo shoot with the event’s resident Santa, adding laughter and smiles to an already memorable night.
