🔶 Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can have significant physical consequences. Besides affecting overall health, these disorders can also lead to various dental problems.

🔶 One of the primary ways eating disorders contribute to dental problems is through the frequent exposure of teeth to stomach acid. The regular contact between the stomach acid and the teeth can cause dental erosion, which is the irreversible loss of tooth enamel. Eroded enamel can lead to tooth sensitivity, discoloration, increased risk of tooth decay, and even tooth loss.

🔶 Anorexia nervosa, characterized by severe restriction of food intake, can also affect oral health. Inadequate nutrition can lead to a weakened immune system, making the gums more susceptible to infection and periodontal disease. Nutrient deficiencies, particularly in calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12, can result in weakened teeth and increased risk of cavities.

🔸Atypical anorexia nervosa is a lesser-known variant of an eating disorder that often goes unrecognized due to its contradictory nature. Unlike typical anorexia, individuals with atypical anorexia tend to have a higher body weight, which may lead to the assumption that they do not struggle with an eating disorder or are not very sick. However, this assumption is far from accurate.

🔸People with atypical anorexia demonstrate similar patterns of restrictive eating and negative thinking as those with anorexia nervosa. They frequently experience intense fear of gaining weight, distorted perception of their bodies, and feelings of shame and guilt surrounding food.

🔸Atypical anorexia can have severe health implications, including malnutrition, heart disease, osteoporosis and significant mental health conditions.. Unfortunately, due to the misconception that individuals with this type of eating disorder are merely "overweight," it often remains unnoticed and untreated.

🔸It is crucial to acknowledge that atypical anorexia is a legitimate and serious medical illness that necessitates specialized treatment. Increasing awareness and understanding of this condition is essential to ensure that those affected receive the necessary support and care to recover and achieve optimal well-being.

🔸 When diagnosed with an eating disorder, understanding levels of care is crucial. Treatment options include outpatient care for mild to moderate cases, intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP) for more severe cases, residential treatment centers (RTC) for intensive support, and inpatient treatment for critical situations. Aftercare and telehealth services are also available.

🔸 The appropriate level of care depends on factors like symptoms, physical health, and support system. A treatment team assesses the individual's needs and may adjust the level of care as necessary. Clear communication among team members and the client is essential.

🔸 Myth: People at a normal body weight cannot have an eating disorder.

✔️ Fact: At their core, many eating disorders are about the undue influence of body weight or shape on self-worth, distortion of body image, and pervasive thoughts about ways to become thinner or to avoid gaining weight. Additionally, eating disorders serve the individual suffering by providing a way to cope with trauma, anxiety, OCD, and other conditions that cause internal distress.

🔸 A person at a “normal” body weight (another several posts on this, alone!) may have all of these features. In fact, normal weight individuals who have these features of eating disorders often suffer more than those who are “underweight. One reason is that the severity of their symptoms are not validated by their appearance by most people in their lives.

🔸Although it may seem like individuals with eating disorders have made a conscious choice to engage in unhealthy behaviors, this is far from the truth. Eating disorders are serious medical conditions that affect both the mind and body, leading to severe disturbances in eating behaviors.

🔸As an expert in eating disorders, I know that these illnesses are not a choice and cannot be overcome through willpower alone. Rather, they require specialized treatment and support to address the complex physical, emotional, and mental aspects of the disorder. 🔸 RED-S is a condition affecting athletes with physical and psychological symptoms due to low energy availability. It impairs multiple bodily systems, such as endocrine and musculoskeletal, and can lead to decreased bone density, menstrual dysfunction, fatigue, and more. RED-S often goes unrecognized, especially in young athletes.

🔸 Treatment requires a multi-disciplinary approach addressing both physical and psychological aspects. Prevention involves maintaining a balanced diet and educating athletes about energy balance.

🔸Eating disorders and mental health issues are closely related. Not only are eating disorders diagnosable mental illnesses, but they also impact other aspects of mental health. Here are some of the most prevalent ways that the two are connected.

🔸There are tremendous effects of eating disorders on mental health, and some of them can be dangerous or life-threatening. Eating disorders are more lethal than other mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. Often, individuals restrict calories so significantly that they die from malnutrition, and as many as 26% of those with eating disorders attempt su***de. Immediate treatment is extremely important to address any eating disorder.

🔸A person struggling with an eating disorder is at increased risk of co-occurring disorders like anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder or substance use disorder. According to a study published in Psychosomatic Medicine, 97 percent of patients being treated for an eating disorder were also diagnosed with one or multiple mental health disorders. About 94 percent of patients struggled with depression or a related mood disorder and 56 percent of patients struggled with an anxiety disorder.
This high correlation between mental health and eating disorders can leave someone wondering which came first. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. It’s evident that they contribute to each other, however, and it may be relevant to note that eating disorders typically have a genetic component, too.

🔸The cause and maintenance of an eating disorder involves various physiological and psychological factors. Thus, the belief that recovery only involves changing eating habits is incorrect and can lead to ineffective treatment.
🔸A narrow focus on behavior instead of addressing the underlying thoughts and processes can result in a higher risk of relapse. It's important to understand that even if eating patterns seem to have improved, the person may still experience anxiety and guilt related to food and therefore, require continued support and compassion.
🔸Family and friends may mistakenly believe that recovery has been achieved based solely on changes in eating habits, but it's crucial to recognize that recovery is a complex journey that involves addressing multiple aspects of the disorder.
