Tamalpa Institute, founded in 1978, offers training programs and workshops in the Life/Art Process, a movement-based expressive arts approach that integrates movement/dance, visual arts, performance techniques and therapeutic practices. This approach supports personal, interpersonal and social transformation, teaching new models for health, psychology, art and communication. This work was originat

ed in the 1950's by Anna Halprin, who is among the first pioneers in the contemporary Western world to use dance as a healing and transformative art. In the 1970's, Daria Halprin further developed the artistic and therapeutic aspects of this work and articulated the methodology that is currently taught in our programs. The institute is a non-profit organization and provides one of the most renowned movement-based healing arts programs in the world.

It’s in The RSVP Cycles, that Lawrence Halprin laid out the theory and process that drove all his work. RSVP stands for Resources, Score, Valuaction, and Performance that when put together, create a creative cycle for collaboration and improvisation.

When a book is referenced twice, from two different people in two different places, in the same week, I know I need to buy it immediately. That’s why Lawrence Halprin’s The RSVP Cycles: Creative Processes in the Human Environment arrived on my doorstep last week. I was vaguely aware of Halprin b...

Update: Due to this unforeseen circumstance, there are some last-minute changes with the format of tomorrow evening’s Shaping San Francisco’s Urban Design: Anna and Lawrence Halprins’ Artistic Legacy.

Tuesday, April 1, 6:30pm-8:00pm, Livestream ONLY. A free ticket is required.

Our presenter, Janice Ross, will need to deliver her talk remotely rather than in-person at our museum.

Those of you who signed up for the livestream will still be able to attend online. The presentation will begin at 6:30 pm on the same page that you used to register for this event: https://givebutter.com/Halprin. Janice will be available for a live Q & A after the presentation

Those of you who registered for in-person attendance are also invited to join the online presentation using the link above. If you are unable to attend online, you’re welcome to come to the SFHS Museum at 608 Commercial Street and watch Janice’s remote presentation with us. We’ll be showing Janice’s presentation on our large screen.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this change has caused. However, this will still be a wonderful evening.

As they say in showbiz: the show must go on!

Forty Years of Giving Movement Back to People - (link in profile)
Part II episode with Daria Halprin we talk about the expressive arts work she’s spent forty plus years creating. We cover the “transportation” issue of how to take your “new self” out into the world and the importance of assuming aesthetic responsibility. Bonus: Daria shares about the last time she made a self-portrait, what still surprises her, and what she’s still fascinated with pursuing over the next 20 years.
