Wait……a what?
Postpartum is usually the time that we focus on our pelvic health because there have been obvious changes to our bodies after pregnancy and birth.
But then many women will carry on life for the next 5-15 years and not really think about their pelvic health.
And then comes perimenopause, which can show up 10 years BEFORE you stop bleeding, so for many women this means around 38-43 years old if the average age for menopause is 51.
Which also means some women move directly into perimenopause after being postpartum.
Perimenopause has A LOT of symptoms that can be physical, emotional and mental. During this time estrogen starts to go a bit haywire, which can directly affect our pelvic health.
It’s common for women to start to experience a gradual onset of pelvic symptoms that are either brand new for them or haven’t been an issue since newly postpartum
Leaking urine
Urinary Frequency
Urinary Urgency
Bladder never feels fully empty
Vaginal Heaviness
Feels like a ball or tampon is low in va**na
Vaginal ache/discomfort
Pain with penetrative s3x
Decreased sensation with s3x
Why does this happen?
When our estrogen levels start to decrease, it can affect anywhere there are estrogen receptors, which includes our pelvic floor muscles and our bladder.
The result is that the muscles and tissues lose some of their structural integrity, get a bit softer and less responsive.
Then when those levels start to decrease, pelvic floor muscle impairments like weakness, become more obvious.
A perimenopause check-up will include assessment of:
Pelvic floor muscles
Pelvic organ prolapse
Urinary and bladder function
Bowel function
Sexual function of pelvic floor and va**nal tissues
Menstrual cycle
This is how we should be going into this next phase of life: being educated and aware of our bodies and being equipped with tools to age in the best way possible.
