Too cute! My 5 year old patient gifted me 2 drawings she made of me (on left with blue eyes) and herself. She put a cross hat on both of us since she wants to be a doctor too. She made sure to point out I could color the pictures on the back of my drawing 🥰😊 I love getting artwork from my patients!

Hyphema is blood in the anterior chamber from blunt force trauma. In this instance, a soccer ball. The same day I had another child with hyphema from a Nerf gun. Treatment of this includes steroid eye drops to reduce inflammation, eye drops to lower eye pressure as often the blood will clog the trabecular meshwork (drainage system of the eye), and cycloplegic eye drops (dilated the pupil) to stabilize the blood-eye barrier. Luckily the blood is resorbed over the course of several days, sometimes weeks, and no surgery is needed to wash out the blood. The child will need yearly monitoring of eye pressure as he/she will have increased risk of developing glaucoma in the future. Pictures posted with permission. Pic on left- day of injury. Pic on right- next day measuring 0.5mm less.

Congenital 4th nerve palsy presents with a head tilt at a young age (usually a few months of age when the infant first gains head control). The hypertropia (one eye higher than the other) causes the child to tilt his/her head to the opposite direction to maintain fusion (avoid double vision). Picture on left before surgery, on right 1 day after surgery. Parents were thrilled and allowed me to share this picture. Long-standing uncorrected torticollis can lead to facial asymmetry as the face matures, hence early strabismus surgery is recommended. Of note, not all torticollis is caused by vertical strabismus

What a difference a few days make. A proper slit lamp exam is needed to make the diagnosis of episcleritis. Most of the time, it is idiopathic and isolated. Trauma, scleritis, iritis, infectious conjunctivitis must be ruled out. If it recurs or history suggests an underlying etiology, a rheumatologic work-up should be done. Artificial tears for mild cases (plus Pataday 0.7% OTC helps with hyperemia) and tincture of time. Posted with permission
