Chickenpox (Varicella) Exposure at Tséhootsooí Medical Center Emergency Department April 4, 2026

Fort Defiance Indian Hospital Board (FDIHB) has confirmed that a person infectious with varicella (chickenpox) was in the Tséhootsooí Medical Center Emergency Department waiting areas on Saturday, April 4, 2026 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. FDIHB is working to notify individuals who have potentially been exposed. Individuals who were at the location at the dates listed below may have been exposed and should monitor for any signs or symptoms of illness.

📍 Location: Tséhootsooí Medical Center Emergency Dept. (Fort Defiance, AZ)
📅 Exposure Date: April 4, 2026 | 12 pm – 5 pm
⚠️ Watch for Symptoms Until: April 25, 2026

What to do if you were at the specified location on the date and time of exposure:

▪️ Individuals who were in this location and know that they have never had chickenpox and have not received 2 doses of the varicella vaccine should contact Tséhootsooí Medical Center as soon as possible at 928.729.8000, because receiving the vaccine or immune globulin within 5 days after the exposure can prevent illness.
▪️Anyone who develops varicella symptoms should stay home and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe. Symptoms usually develop 8 to 21 days after an exposure.
⚠️ ☎️ If you seek medical attention, call ahead and let them know you have been exposed to chickenpox before entering the building.

How to Prevent Varicella: The best way to prevent chickenpox (varicella) is through vaccination. Children should receive their first dose at 12 months and the second at age 4, unless medically contraindicated. Check with your healthcare provider to ensure vaccinations are up to date. Vaccines are available at Tséhootsooí Medical Center: Primary Care Clinic 928.729.8032 and Pediatric Clinic 928.729.8710.

Measles Cases Increase Around Navajo Nation. FDIHB Recommends Early Extra Dose of MMR Vaccine for Children 6-11 Months Old if Traveling to Utah.

Due to the significant number of measles cases in Utah, Fort Defiance Indian Hospital Board (FDIHB) would like to advise our communities that children 6 to 11 months old traveling to Utah receive an extra early dose of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. Measles is highly contagious, especially for unvaccinated babies and young children. The best way to prevent measles is to get the MMR vaccine, which is safe and effective. This advisement follows the Utah Department of Health and Human Services recommendation for all Utah children 6 to 11 months to receive an early dose of the MMR vaccine (epi.utah.gov/measles-response/).

FDIHB facilities are currently offering an early dose of the MMR vaccine for children 6 to 11 months old traveling to Utah. The early dose and regular two-dose MMR vaccine series (for children 1 year and older) is available at Tséhootsooí Medical Center, Pediatric Clinic.

If you plan to travel to Utah, make sure everyone is protected against measles. Check your immunization and medical records or talk to your health care provider to see whether you are protected from measles. Ensure all travelers receive their vaccine at least 2 weeks before you leave.

▪️ Babies 6 to 11 months old should get an early dose of the MMR vaccine. Everyone 12 months and older (including adults) should get 2 total doses before travel.

▪️ If you haven't been vaccinated before, get the 1st dose right away. You can get the 2nd dose 28 days later. If you've gotten 1 dose before, get a 2nd dose before travel. Even if your trip is less than 2 weeks away, you can still get 1 dose of the MMR vaccine.

To view measles cases by state visit CDC site: https://www.cdc.gov/measles/data-research/index.html. For more information about measles cases in Utah visit: https://epi.utah.gov/measles-response/. For updates and changes, please look at our Facebook or Instagram pages.
