Intermountain’s interesting X-ray of the week!

Our doctors of chiropractic help many patients each week that have had all different kinds of surgeries such as discectomies, laminectomies, spinal fusions both anterior and posterior, and disc replacements like this cervical x-ray. This patient has two artificial disc replacements at their C5 and C6 and still receives regular chiropractic care!

Intermountain’s X-ray of the week post!

This X-ray is an example of a congenital fusion in the cervical spine of C2/C3. It can happen at any level and can involve more than one vertebrae. This happens early in pregnancy, the spine forms as a column that is suppose to segment into individual vertebrae and form a disc. If this segmentation fails in a spot, those vertebrae remain joined, creating a congenital fusion that is there from birth. This will create a lack of mobility and can create issues in the surrounding vertebrae due to lack of motion. This is one of many great reasons X-rays are important! They give us so much information about our bodies and give our doctors insight on how to take care of you the best they can! 💪🏼

At Intermountain Wellness we understand it is important to support your spine with strong and balanced muscles!

Our core, glutes, hip flexors, (and almost all the muscles from the base of our skull to our feet) can influence our spinal health. When they’re weak or overactive, they can change our biomechanics which can cause more stress and wear and tear on our joints and discs. Strength training can help offload that pressure and improves spinal stability! It also helps reduce the risk of future injury, just as getting adjusted can as well! Curious about why Gonstead chiropractors use a nervoscope? 🤔

This specialized tool plays a huge role in allowing us to be specific with our adjustments. The nervoscope detects changes in skin temperature along the spine, which can indicate areas of nerve interference, dysfunction and inflammation. By identifying these subtle variations, we can better pinpoint misalignments or subluxations that might be affecting your overall health. This precise, objective measure allows us to be sure we are adjusting the correct areas and leaving others alone that are functioning properly. Intermountain’s interesting x-ray finding of the week!

This is an example of Bertolotti syndrome! A congenital spine condition where an extra or abnormally shaped lumbar vertebra forms a partial fusion or joint with the sacrum and/or Illium , leading to altered biomechanics and chronic low back pain. There are different grades based on if it is fused, forms a pseudo joint, and/or is unilateral or bilateral. Roughly 10% of people evaluated for low back pain are diagnosed with Bertolottis syndrome!
