𝐒𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞?

Remote Field Care (RFC) is LWM's wilderness medicine textbook and is written in a narrative format. WFR students have been using the first edition since 2021. The second edition features a new section on leadership, increased focus on stress response in patients and responders, updated charts and images, and 40 new pages of current, research-based information and practices.

Instead of focusing solely on action like the Wilderness Medicine Field Guide, RFC gives more background about prevention, assessment, and treatment.

Would I take it on a kayak? 𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭. It is a great option for a pre-trip resource, but would definitely get waterlogged (and really heavy) if it went for a swim. Weighing in at 1lb, leave it at home and pack a Field Guide and extra snacks instead.

The Field Guide is designed as a quick-reference tool to support assessment and treatment in the field. It features easy-to-use flow charts and guides to help determine appropriate action based on signs and symptoms. Check out the respiratory distress section - we've worked to take the guess work out of response.

Q: Is it REALLY waterproof?
Printed on Rite in the Rain paper, it is absolutely waterproof. No Field Guides were dunked in the taking of this photo, but if it was, it would still be 100% usable.

Hey Duluth-area alums and friends! Check out this great opportunity with Outdoor Pursuit at The College of St. Scholastica to build a local wilderness medicine community.

We are starting a group for individuals interested in building a community focused on wilderness medicine. If you have wilderness medical training, we invite you to our inaugural meeting.

During this meeting, we will run a scenario to practice your patient assessment skills, discuss a case, and brainstorm ideas for future gatherings.

These meetings are designed to help you practice and refine your current skills. Please note that they are not intended to serve as formal training sessions.

Confused about using an Apple satellite device? Teton County Search and Rescue put together a resource that provides some great insight. If you have this technology in your pocket, take a gander before heading out on your next adventure.

So far this winter, Teton County Search & Rescue has been alerted four times via Apple iPhone’s new satellite SOS function. Due to questions surrounding this new technology, we’ve put together some information about best practices regarding how to use this function during a backcountry emergency.
