:: The Heart Has Its Own Nervous System ::

Your heart contains about 40,000 neurons.

This is sometimes referred to as the heart’s intrinsic nervous system.

When you take time to feel gratitude or appreciation, you are engaging this system.

This can support a more balanced state in the body — one associated with reduced stress hormones and improved cognitive function.

The heart is not separate from how you feel.

It participates.

:: A Different Way to Picture the Heart ::

What image comes to mind when you think of your heart?

A red mass of muscle?

Something isolated?

Now consider this instead.

A connected system of vessels — branching, flowing, and converging like waterways seen from above.

Smaller streams feeding into larger rivers.

The cardiovascular system as a whole.

This is the landscape inside your body.

:: More Than a Pump ::

When we think of the cardiovascular system, we often simplify it.

Heart. Blood. Blood vessels.

The heart pumps blood, moving oxygen and nutrients through the body.

But this system is far more dynamic than those basic concepts.

It is constantly moving, adapting, and responding.

There is much more happening here than we typically picture.

:: 60,000 Miles ::

Your cardiovascular system contains about 60,000 miles of arteries, veins, and capillaries.

That’s enough to go around the Earth more than twice.

It’s easy to think of this system as simple — the heart pumping blood through vessels.

But the infrastructure within you is far more dynamic than that.

This is something we continue to reflect on in this work — how much is happening beneath the surface, all the time.

:: 40,000 Skin Cells a Minute ::

Your body is constantly renewing itself.

Every minute, your skin sheds roughly 30,000–40,000 cells.

Over the course of a year, that can add up to 8–9 pounds of skin cells.

Even when you don’t notice it, your body is continuously adapting, repairing, and reorganizing.

Working with the skin every day offers a clear reminder of how active this system truly is.

:: Listening With Your Skin ::

Your skin contains millions of receptors that are constantly gathering information — pressure, temperature, vibration, stretch.

During bodywork, these receptors are continuously communicating with the nervous system.

This is where the work begins.

Through the skin, therapeutic touch becomes a form of communication with the body.

It is a constant exchange of information — one that we learn to pay attention to over time.

:: You Are a Living Ecosystem ::

Each person who walks through our doors brings more than what we can see.

Your skin hosts billions of microorganisms.

Scientists estimate that we carry more non-human cells on and within our bodies than human ones.

Many of these microbes help regulate inflammation, support immune responses, and prevent harmful bacteria from growing.

In a very real way, each of us is a living, breathing ecosystem.

This is something we think about often in this work — the body is constantly interacting with the environment around it.

:: Gratitude for the Skin ::

Over the past month, we’ve taken time to appreciate the integumentary system — the system we encounter first in every bodywork session.

Your skin protects you, senses the world around you, communicates with your nervous system, and continually renews itself.

As we slide into April, we will continue our Year of Gratitude by exploring another remarkable system of the human body.

There is always more to discover.

:: Sunlight and Skin ::

A day like today doesn’t come around every week this time of year.

When sunlight touches your skin, it begins a process that helps the body produce Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is associated with bone health, immune function, mood, and hormone balance.

As bodyworkers, we spend much of our time working with skin indoors — which is why days like this are worth noticing.

Even a few minutes of sunlight on your skin activates one of the many ways this system supports the body every day.

:: Skin and the Nervous System ::

Your skin and your nervous system share a fascinating origin.

During early development in the womb, both systems form from the same embryonic layer — the ectoderm.

From the very beginning of life, these systems are deeply connected.

Your skin is constantly communicating with your brain.

When we work with the skin in bodywork, that conversation often travels deeper into the nervous system.

:: The Doorway Into the Body ::

The skin is the largest organ in the human body.

It covers about 20 square feet and accounts for roughly 15% of your body weight.

For massage therapists, this is the system we meet first.

Through the skin, we begin to understand the body beneath it — the tone of muscle, the movement of fascia, and the subtle shifts that happen during a session.

The skin isn’t just a boundary.
In bodywork, it becomes the doorway into the rest of the body.
